Wrexham have completed yet another coup in the transfer market as they have signed attacker James McClean from Wigan.

McClean, 34, has joined for a fee of around £250k, and will reunite with Ben Foster, whom he played with at West Brom.

This is a huge signing for the League Two side, with McClean arriving as a former Premier League star with 100 Republic Of Ireland caps to his name.

He will help fill the attacking void in Paul Mullin’s absence whilst the star striker recovers from injury, and help inject more quality into Phil Parkinson’s side.

It is another big arrival for Wrexham’s ambitious project under owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, and McClean has expressed his delight at joining.

“I’m absolutely delighted to sign for Wrexham. It’s a project that is very exciting and I’m looking forward to being a part of it,” he stated.

A tough start for Wrexham

Despite being favourites to secure back-to-back promotions, Wrexham were given a reality check on the opening day of the season as they were beaten 3-5 at home by MK Dons.

Goals clearly weren’t the problem, but Wrexham were vulnerable at the back as they struggled to cope with the step up in level, having returned to the Football League for the first time since 2008.

They will hope McClean can make his debut soon, and his experience can help the squad find their best form in this division, and when Mullin eventually returns, he could play alongside the striker.

McClean’s versatility means that although most comfortable on the left wing, he can play almost anywhere in attacking and midfield positions, and with 71 goals in his 562-game career so far, he will add plenty of firepower upfront as he plays in League Two for the first time.
