Wrexham keen to bolster defence with born ‘leader’, Phil Parkinson wants to raid a Championship rival

Phil Parkinson has turned towards one Championship defender as a potential option to improve his Wrexham defence this summer.

Wrexham suffered defeat against Southampton in their opening Championship tie in cruel fashion.

Whilst Phil Parkinson’s side left St Mary’s without picking up a point, supporters were very proud of the side going toe-to-toe with a recently relegated Premier League side for over 90 minutes.

There were more positives than negatives to take from the contest, but the defeat made it clear that Wrexham would significantly benefit from extra signings, particularly in defence.

As a result, Wrexham have targeted one centre-back with Premier League and Championship experience.

Wrexham ‘hope to sign’ experienced Sheffield United ace Jack Robinson

As reported by The Sun, Sheffield United defender Jack Robinson is wanted by Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson, with the Red Dragons keen to raid a fellow Championship side.

It has been reported that ‘talks were advanced last week’ until Sheffield United sold star centre-back Anel Ahmedhodzic to Feyenoord; however, Wrexham still have hope of acquiring the 31-year-old.

Wrexham have already brought in the experienced Conor Coady from Leicester City, and the former England international showed his vast quality in the Championship opener against Southampton.

Jack Robinson was benched in Sheffield United’s opening game against Bristol City, but was brought on in the second half in an attempt to salvage a game that ended as a 4-1 defeat for the Blades.

What Jack Robinson’s former Sheffield United boss said about him will get Wrexham fans excited

Sheffield United defender Jack Robinson has conjured up a wealth of experience for the South Yorkshire club, where he has made 159 appearances.

With 54 games in the Premier League to his name as well, Wrexham would benefit from having such an experienced professional in defence, such as Robinson.

If Wrexham fans were not yet sold on the idea of targeting Robinson, they certainly will be after reading the praise that former Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder once gave him.

Via The Bladesman, Wilder once said: “I won’t say he’s old school, he’s right school. He wants to win, he wants to put a tackle in, he’s aggressive, he’s a leader, he says the right things, he acts the right way, and his attitude to everything is why he’s the player that he is.

“We’re delighted with what he’s achieved here. He came out of Liverpool, went to QPR, went to Forest, wasn’t playing and come here and he’s been a big player, arguably our best player last year and found it difficult this year because of his injury at the start and Anel [Ahmedhodzic] and Soutts’ [Harry Souttar] partnership but we all knew he wouldn’t take it lying down, and he’s been excellent.”

Such a deal could prove to be tricky for Wrexham as a result of Sheffield United’s depleted defensive options, but there is no doubt that Robinson would be a brilliant signing by Phil Parkinson.
