Wrexham summer transfer target Nick Powell joins League 2 rivals

Nick Powell has unfortunately snubbed Wrexham and has decided to sign for Stockport County, in what is a very interesting revelation.

It was initially reported a few weeks back that the former Manchester United man is settled in South Cheshire, not far from Wrexham, and was open to dropping down two divisions to play for the Red Dragons.

However, a major blow occurred, with Powell then spotted training with League 2 side Crew Alexandra – which led many to believe Wrexham’s chances of signing him were dead in the water.

But remarkably, it wasn’t Crewe Alexandra that Powell ended up signing for, with another League 2 club being the team that snapped up his signature.

Stockport County sign Nick Powell

A club that didn’t even look in the race to begin with eventually secured the ex-Man United and Stoke City midfielder – Stockport County.

It really is a superb signing for a League 2 club – but a massive blow for Wrexham. Powell possesses an undeniable quality that could have vastly improved the Red Dragons’ midfield.

The only saving grace is that, despite the quality, he is one of the most injury-prone footballers in the entirety of Britain. Saying that, if Stockport can keep him fit – he’ll be a fantastic asset, but that’ll probably be the hardest task.

Wrexham will now be forced to look elsewhere in the market, as they look for their first signing as a club in the football league.

Who else is currently on Wrexham’s radar?

There are a few names that have been floating about – but nothing concrete.

There’s still plenty of time left, so let’s see what happens over the rest of the window.
