Wrexham welcomed Burton Albion in the EFL Trophy and succumbed to a 3-2 defeat on the night. Here are our player ratings…

It has been a great season so far for Wrexham with them fighting on three fronts coming into this clash vs Burton Albion.

On the night, Phil Parkinson named a heavily rotated squad featuring a mix of youth and experience in search of progression to the next round.

The Reds started in about as bad circumstances as possible. This as Deji Oshilaja scored with barely 30 seconds on the clock. The Brewers doubled their lead not two minutes later as Mark Helm smashed in a beauty from the edge of the box.

The away side’s advantage was halved on the five-minute mark. Sam Dalby picked up the ball and curled an effort in from long range. What a goal and what a crazy start at The Racecourse. This is how it stayed until the halftime whistle came and went.

The second half saw the Reds dominate for large spells but it was Burton who scored. Josh Gordon getting on the end of a loose ball in the box to tap past Luke McNicholas.

Liam McAlinden forced a corner late on and his delivery was met by Jordan Davies. His header was top-class but nothing more than a consultation.

Burton rode their luck and took their chances. On the flip side, Wrexham didn’t create many quality chances throughout. With all that being said, here’s our player ratings…

Wrexham player ratings vs Burton Albion

Luke McNicholas- 6/10

In fairness to McNicholas, he couldn’t do much about the goals that he conceded. He made a few decent saves and had a rather positive performance.

Callum McFadzean- 5/10

A return for Callum McFadzean who had only made very limited appearances this season. He didn’t do much right or wrong. Although his pass accuracy was just 52%. He gets an average score on the player ratings.

Max Cleworth- 5/10

Another decent performance from the young Englishman who will hope for more minutes this season. Whether or not he gets them is a different question.

Will Boyle- 6/10

A few great blocks from Will Boyle summed up his performance. Despite conceding a few goals he tried his best and was one of the better performers.

Aaron James- 5/10

It was an assured performance for the youngster who performed to a decent level given his age. He will hope for more minutes as the season goes on.

Liam McAlinden- 6/10

He lost the majority of his duels and failed to have a real impact on the game. His score on the player ratings is brought up by his assist for the late goal to make it 3-2.

Luke Young- 6/10

The midfield was the main positive to take out of a rather dull evening at The Racecourse. Luke Young’s return could have gone better but he was still assured as he so often is.

James Jones- 6/10

Like Young, Jones had quite an assured if unspectacular performance. He and the captain performed well and stood out amongst a quiet team on the night.

Jordan Davies- 7/10

Jordan Davies did try to make things happen and looked forward where he could. This saw him grab a goal late in the day off the corner. A solid enough performance from the midfielder.

Jake Bickerstaff- 5/10

A lack of chances really fell the way of Luke Bickerstaff and as a result, it is hard to give him a particularly great score.

Sam Dalby- 7/10

What a goal he scored by the way. His score in these player ratings goes up solely for that reason. An ok performance and good to see him back on the scoresheet.
