Wrexham were aiming to book their place in the semi-final of the EFL Trophy when they met Bolton Wanderers in midweek.

Phil Parkinson, as was to be expected, made some changes to the Wrexham starting lineup fans have become accustomed to seeing in the league.

Despite costing his side a goal in the previous round of the competition against Port Vale, Sebastian Revan was in from the off once more against Bolton Wanderers.

Dan Scarr was also given another rare runout, while George Evans managed to keep his place in midfield.

A new-look striker partnership was also given a run out with Modou Faal, who scored and assisted last week, partnering a recently returned Jack Marriott up top.

It was a strong eleven regardless, and with Wrexham playing at the Racecourse Ground, they were favourites to progress and face Peterborough United in the last four.

Wrexham has given Phil Parkinson selection headache after Bolton Wanderers

It was a slow start to the game from the home side, who were largely pegged back inside their own final third for the opening 20 minutes.

However, when all was said and done, Wrexham beat Bolton 1-0 to come away with the victory and secure the meeting with Peterborough.

It was by no means a great showing from Parkinson’s men, as evident from the fact the manager opted to bring four players on at once when it was still 0-0.

And while Andy Cannon’s moment of magic won the game, it was another player who started the match that was the true star of the show.

Evans has seen very little game time this season, in part due to injury, but his performance against Bolton will surely have given Parkinson a lot to think about going forward.

George Evans Wrexham stats vs Bolton

The 30-year-old has notched just 105 minutes of League One football this term but more than held his own against a side pushing for the play-offs.

He dominated the midfield battle and, though it was largely down to Cannon, did get the assist for the winner.

There is a lot of competition for places in midfield, especially now Elliot Lee has dropped back into his natural position.

But given how well he played on Tuesday, Parkinson may be thinking about trying to get Evans back into the League One fold on a more regular basis going forward.

It’s a welcome problem for the Wrexham manager, especially now they are set to play two games a week for the forseeable.
