Wrexham travelled to Wigan Athletic in their latest League One test in the race for promotion.

Phil Parkinson kept his winning formula as he named the same Wrexham side for the sixth consecutive League One match and there was still no place for Paul Mullin in the squad.

The Red Dragons were disappointed with their first half display as Wigan looked the more likely to threaten but it ended goal less and the Wrexham fans were beginning to become disgruntled.

Wigan had the better of the second half as Arthur Okonkwo made a couple of fine saves to keep Maleace Asamoah at bay.

A point is not the worst result in the bid for promotion however, with Wycombe’s late 1-0 win over Stevenage, the pressure has now been cranked up on Wrexham.

Paul Mullin watches clash with Wrexham fans

Mullin has denied a rift with Parkinson but the continued exile of the 100 goal plus striker must be getting to the 30-year-old.

However, in a mark of the professionalism of the player, Mullin was at the Brick Community Stadium in support of his team mates and even watched the game in amongst the Wrexham fans.

Wrexham supporters could be heard chanting his name throughout the match as they showed their continued love for the man that has achieved so much since arriving at the Racecourse Ground.

His future at the club might be in doubt but for the remainder of this campaign he is right behind the Red Dragons and ready to be called upon if needed.

Wrexham failed to have a shot on target

The script was always going to be a tight and nervy affair at the Brick Community Stadium but Parkinson would have been furious with his side’s lack of composure during their display.

Some indecision and sloppiness in possession almost gifted Wigan chances on several occasions and despite having more of the ball, Wrexham were poor with their execution of their passes and deliveries into forward areas.

The travelling support grew more and more frustrated and almost boiled over when an aimless ball from Lewis Brunt went straight through to Wigan keeper Sam Tickle under no pressure whatsoever.

Neither side had a shot on target in a dreadful first half and Parkinson’s side couldn’t muster an effort to trouble Tickle as two points slipped away.

Sam Smith isolated once again for Wrexham

Sam Smith has had the ability to produce moments out of nothing since arriving at the Red Dragons in the January transfer window but there comes a point where he is going to need help from his team mates.

Smith had just five touches in the first half of the clash with Wigan and despite his incredible work rate, the 27-year-old just could not get into the game.

Should Parkinson’s side get over the line and make the Championship next season, the team is going to have to be set up in a different way that gives more support to Smith.

Otherwise, against better defenders in the division above, his frustration is going to grow and grow amid having to create everything for himself.

Eoghan O’Connell continues to impress in defence

There was a period of the season around Christmas and into the new year where Eoghan O’Connell seemed to have lost all confidence in his ability and was making mistakes costing his side goals and points.

After returning to the side in the dramatic win at Crawley Town, O’Connell has been nothing short of sensational at the heart of the Wrexham back three.

The Red Dragons weathered a Wigan storm in the first half where their own sloppiness gave the home side some encouragement but the Irish defender was the man to thwart any efforts and this continued throughout the game.

Phil Parkinson booked on frustrating afternoon

Parkinson’s frustration at the stalemate boiled over in the 68th minutes as the Wrexham boss was booked by referee Adam Herczeg.

The Red Dragons were about to make a triple substitution to try and wrestle the initiative and after having been involved in some previous altercations with the the Wigan bench, Parkinson’s temper flared.

He was shown a yellow card for his actions involving the opposition coaching staff and the fourth official and the manager must keep a cool head in the promotion run in as he sets the example for his players.
