Wrexham can feel a little unlucky not to have won having impressed in a 1-1 draw against Birmingham City on Thursday night.

Wrexham were in action for the second Thursday in a row as Sky Sports fixture changes produced a scheduling quirk.

Birmingham City were the visitors this time around in a huge clash in the League One promotion race.

Wrexham took the lead against the leaders though as Ollie Rathbone curled home delightful strike to send the STōK Cae Ras wild.

The Blues hit back though, just as they did when the sides met in September, with Lyndon Dykes bagging the leveller.

Wrexham were brilliant in the second half though and were unlucky not to find a winner after piling on the pressure.

George Dobson hails Wrexham teammate

Wrexham were so poor against Shrewsbury last week but really ramped it up this time.

A point is still a decent result and the display at least saw Wrexham responding with a strong showing.

A number of Wrexham players impressed on the night but Rathbone produced the real moment of quality.

Rathbone picked the ball up, drove forward and unleashed a superb strike which Ryan Allsop got nowhere near to saving.

Wrexham teammate George Dobson has now hailed Rathbone whilst speaking to Sky Sports (23/01, 21:55).

Dobson suggested that Rathbone has found a real habit for scoring big goals, such as the last-gasp winner against Barnsley in December.

Dobson added that Rathbone is always scoring goals in training, hailing him as a ‘top player’.

“He’s found a knack lately of picking up some important goals for us,” said Dobson.

“He does it every day in training so we were buzzing for him. Obviously, we wouldn’t have minded if he put the other one in at the end of the first half but no, he’s doing really well and he’s a top player,” he added.

Wrexham have struck gold with Ollie Rathbone

Wrexham landed Rathbone over the summer, prising him away from Rotherham United.

Steve Evans claimed a ‘significant fee’ for Rathbone with Wrexham happy to pay up for the midfielder.

Rathbone endured a slightly slow start to life at Wrexham and was struggling to break into the side.

That feels like an awfully long time ago now though as Rathbone is becoming one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Rathbone’s energy is a real driving force in the Wrexham midfield and his penchant for scoring big goals cannot be overlooked.

Rathbone just doesn’t seem to be slowing down for Wrexham and that summer deal now looks like a masterstroke.
