Wrexham picked up another key victory on Tuesday night as Steven Fletcher scored the only goal against Huddersfield Town.

The League One season is heading towards its conclusion and Wrexham’s promotion hopes are still well and truly alive.

Wrexham beat Huddersfield Town 1-0 on Tuesday night with Steven Fletcher bagging the only goal of the game.

Fletcher earned praise from Wrexham fans as he scored from close range in a narrow victory.

The win means that Wrexham matched Wycombe Wanderers’ 2-0 victory over Burton Albion, staying two points behind the Chairboys.

Ollie Rathbone on Steven Fletcher

Fletcher was the hero for Wrexham but has diverted the attention elsewhere.

Fletcher has praised Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez, believing that Wrexham’s two starting strikers are making a big impact right now.

The Scot has though been hailed by teammate Ollie Rathbone following Tuesday’s victory.

Speaking to Wrexham’s official YouTube channel, Rathbone admitted that Fletcher is ‘so popular’ in the Wrexham dressing room.

Rathbone noted that Fletcher is ‘so important’ both on and off the pitch’, all whilst having ‘immense talent’ to give everybody a lift when he comes on.

“He’s such an important part of the squad, both on and off the pitch, he’s so popular in the changing room,” said Rathbone.

“He’s great with all the other players and yeah, when he comes on, I think he gives everyone a bit of a lift and you know that he’s got immense talent, so we’re lucky to have him,” he added.

Steven Fletcher takes key role in changing Wrexham pecking order

Phil Parkinson made his thoughts on Fletcher absolutely clear earlier this season.

Parkinson suggested that Fletcher is ‘almost unplayable’ when coming off the bench, believing that he poses such a threat in that role.

Fletcher has proven Parkinson right with his continued habit of scoring big goals as a substitute.

Fletcher seems happy enough to sit on the bench and make his impact late on with January signings Smith and Rodriguez leading the line.

Not long ago, Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer were considered to be Wrexham’s top pairing with Fletcher and Jack Marriott on the bench.

Wrexham’s attacking pecking order has been in flux though and both Mullin and Palmer suddenly find themselves on the fringes.

Fletcher and Marriott are still making the bench though and will have key roles between now and the end of the season.

Fletcher may be turning 38 later this month but he certainly looks like he has plenty left in the tank – and there could be more big goals to come as Wrexham chase promotion.
