Wrexham moved up to second place in the League One table on Saturday afternoon by beating Exeter City 3-0 at the STōK Cae Ras.

Wrexham were back at home this weekend, looking to bounce back after losing 1-0 at Stockport County last weekend.

Away form has been a concern for Wrexham but home results have been brilliant all season – and that continued this weekend.

Max Cleworth impressed Wrexham fans as he scored yet another goal to open the scoring before Ollie Palmer added number two.

Ollie Rathbone scored his first Wrexham goal to make it 3-0, securing all three points in convincing fashion.

Phil Parkinson praises Wrexham defender

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson decided to ring the changes for this one.

Parkinson played Elliot Lee off Palmer in attack whilst bringing Rathbone, Matty James and Lewis Brunt into the starting XI.

The changes worked as Wrexham romped home to victory and kept a clean sheet in the process.

Defender Brunt was deployed on the left side of Wrexham’s back three, replacing Thomas O’Connor in that role.

Brunt turned in a solid performance in his first league start of the season, earning praise from Parkinson in the process.

Speaking to Wrexham Match Day Live on Wrexham’s official YouTube channel, Parkinson praised Brunt for stepping out from defence with the ball and turning in a ‘really good performance’.

“Brunty stepped in with the ball, like we hoped he would, and put in a really good performance,” said Parkinson.

Parkinson continued by noting that Wrexham actually fought off competition for Brunt’s signature from other clubs over the summer.

Brunt may have been left wondering whether he made the right choice given his lack of first-team action.

Parkinson has praised Brunt’s patience though and hailed him for a ‘dominant’ performance defensively.

“We fought off a lot of clubs to bring Brunty here but we’ve got a very good defensive record ourselves, so he’s had to be patient.

“We felt the time was right to play him. He’s done well in the cup games and I think everybody saw what he was all about today. He was dominant in the air, stepped in, got tight to their number 10 on that side and played really, really well.

“I’m pleased for him, because it’s not easy when you come to a new club and you don’t get in the team. He came with an injury, so he was always a bit behind,” he added.

Mansfield Town made Brunt their number one target after a successful loan spell but Nigel Clough noted he couldn’t compete with Wrexham financially.

Peterborough United also wanted Brunt but chairman Darragh MacAnthony claims that Wrexham blew them out of the water on wages.

Parkinson’s comments certainly line up with that interest and Wrexham will certainly feel that Brunt’s arrival was a major transfer win after a strong performance on Saturday.
