Phil Parkinson offers brief verdict on Ryan Longman’s Wrexham debut, drops early lineup hint v Crawley Town

Wrexham have fallen to a home defeat for the first time this season having been beaten 3-2 by Stevenage on Tuesday night.

Wrexham were looking to build on an improved performance against Birmingham City last week.

That display at least put the defeat to Shrewsbury Town in the rear view mirror and Phil Parkinson was hoping for another improved display.

Instead, Parkinson and Wrexham suffered a first home defeat of the campaign.

Stevenage raced into a 2-0 lead with Dan Kemp and Jamie Reid finding the net before Ollie Rathbone gave Wrexham hope.

Jake Young restored Stevenage’s two-goal lead and whilst Max Cleworth grabbed another goal back, there was to be no equaliser.

Phil Parkinson fumes over Wrexham defeat

This was a seriously flat Wrexham performance with almost no cohesion – especially in the first half.

Stevenage were simply the better side and Wrexham conceded three soft goals in a frustrating defeat.

Wrexham’s unbeaten home run is now over and fans are understandably concerned with no home fixture in March.

Wrexham have not impressed on the road this season and Parkinson must now come up with some answers.

Speaking to Wrexham Match Day Live, Parkinson noted that his team to face Crawley Town this weekend will be set up to ‘fight’.

Parkinson worryingly added that some Wrexham players looked short of confidence against Stevenage, suggesting that big changes are coming this weekend.

“I’ve got to reflect on tonight and obviously we go away from home on Saturday and now myself and the staff have got two or three days to prepare for that game,” said Parkinson.

“At the moment, this game is in my mind, not the next one. I’ll be reviewing this game and pick the team which is going to fight, it’s going to fight tooth and nail for every ball all over the pitch.

“There wasn’t enough determination and some players looked a bit low on confidence for whatever reason tonight, and grit and determination and structure can you see through, but we didn’t have that tonight,” he added.

Parkinson gives brief verdict on Ryan Longman

Wrexham were able to hand a debut to new signing Ryan Longman in the second.

Longman signed for Wrexham on Friday, completing a £500,000 move from Hull City.

Longman was given number 47 before kick off but Parkinson chose to name him on the Wrexham bench.

Parkinson threw Longman on in the second half as Wrexham chased goals and he looked dangerous down the right side.

Parkinson understandably didn’t want to talk too much about positives after such a difficult night, but he did offer some praise.

“Yeah, he did well, he did well, he’s a good player,” said Parkinson.

Perhaps Longman will be one player to come into the Wrexham side this weekend with nobody from Tuesday’s starting XI safe.
