Wrexham are out of the Carabao Cup having been beaten 4-2 at Sheffield United despite a late goal from Sebastian Revan.

Phil Parkinson got the season off to a perfect start with a 3-2 home victory over Wycombe Wanderers as Wrexham opened the League One campaign in style.

Wrexham then turned the attention to the Carabao Cup with a trip to Bramall Lane.

Sheffield United were a Premier League side last season but Wrexham took a first-half lead as Will Boyle opened the scoring from close range.

The Blades responded though as Auston Trusty headed home before Lewis Brunt’s own goal left Wrexham trailing.

Louie Marsh and Anis Ben Slimane finished the game off as a contest before Sebastian Revan fired home a late consolation for Wrexham.

Phil Parkinson on Sebastian Revan

Wrexham battled well but just came up short against Chris Wilder’s side.

Parkinson named 10 changes to the side which beat Wycombe, with James McClean the only player to keep his place in the side.

This was a chance for Parkinson to see some of his summer signings in competitive action with Brunt, Callum Burton, Dan Scarr and latest signing Ollie Rathbone all starting.

Revan also came into the side at left wing back and showed his talent with an impressive display.

The new signing from Aston Villa posed a real threat and came so close to scoring in the first half as he hooked the ball narrowly wide of the target.

Revan did get his goal in injury time and received praise from Wrexham boss Parkinson after the final whistle.

Speaking to Sky Sports (22:30), Parkinson admitted that he feels Revan has been ‘outstanding’ in pre-season and backed that up with a similar display against Sheffield United.

Parkinson believes that Revan could have had a hat-trick against the Blades and highlighted his superb attacking ability up the left flank.

The Wrexham boss added a prediction, confidently stating that Revan will prove to be a ‘great signing’ for the club moving forward.

“Seb’s been outstanding in pre-season, he’s very unlucky not to have started at the weekend,” said Parkinson. “He scored against Vancouver Whitecaps with a great goal, he’s great at getting in on the back stick and he could have had a hat-trick tonight. He’s had the one in the first half, a bit unlucky, second half the keeper has made a great save and then he finally got his goal, so brilliant for him and he’s going to be a great signing for us,” he added.

Revan knocking on the door

Some Wrexham fans may have been slightly surprised to see Revan on the bench against Wycombe on Saturday.

Revan has impressed in pre-season with his attacking ability up the left flank causing all sorts of problems.

Parkinson went with McClean at left wing back against Wycombe though, leaving Revan on the bench.

Revan has now taken his chance to shine though and has made himself difficult to ignore ahead of facing Bolton Wanderers this weekend.

Whether it’s this weekend or in the coming weeks, Revan will surely come into the starting lineup on a regular basis at Wrexham.

The former Rotherham United has really caught the eye as an attacking wing back and Tuesday’s goal will only add to the belief that he can be a difference-maker moving forward.
