Wrexham secure vital 2-0 away win at rivals

The two sides have become bitter rivals in recent years after vying for the National League title last season. That title race culminated in an unforgettable 3-2 win at the Racecourse for the Reds, who had Ben Foster to thank for a 96th minute penalty save.

Wrexham would go on to win the National League title with a record points tally of 111. That would see them qualify automatically into League Two, whereas Notts Count were eventually promoted after beating Chesterfield in the play-off final.

The Dragons suffered a number of injuries against County at the weekend, with Ryan Barnett, Eoghan O’Connell, and Jordan Tunnicliffe all picking up knocks.

However, Phil Parkinson‘s men were able to weather the storm and come away with a fantastic 2-0 away win. Wrexham’s player of the season so far, Elliot Lee, broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute before Ollie Palmer added a second from close range three minutes later.

Phil Parkinson says Wrexham’s win over Notts County was one of his best days as a manager

According to the manager himself, it’s one of his best ever days as a manager.

“It’s right up there in terms of performances in my time as a manager because we’ve come here with a lot of disruption,” Phil Parkinson explained to Wrexham’s official YouTube channel. “We lost two key players on Tuesday [Ryan Barnett and Eoghan O’Connell]. Aaron Hayden is still not fit, then we lost Jordan Tunnicliffe in the warm-up as well – he’s been playing really well.

“But there are no excuses and the lads have implemented the game-plan incredibly well. [Notts County] are a good side, we know that from many terrific games against them. But the way we’ve gone about our business [in this game] was first class.”

Speaking about the rivalry with County, he added: “It is still early in the season but when you come up against a team who you have battled hard against over the last couple of years, it is always a bit special.

“There is a mutual respect between both clubs, both managers and both sets of players because we have had some great games against them.

“We will look forward to the next one when they come to The Racecourse.

Wrexham are unbeaten in eight games and now occupy one of the the three automatic promotion places into League One.
