Wrexham have moved back up into second place in the League One table after beating Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.

Phil Parkinson saw Wrexham lose 2-0 at Reading in midweek ahead of arguably the biggest game of the season.

Wrexham travelled to Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday afternoon as second hosted third in the League One table.

Fans were expecting a real improvement on that defeat at Reading and Wrexham managed to get the job done.

Sam Smith’s brilliant volley handed Wrexham a 1-0 victory and second place in League One.

Parkinson has hailed Smith for his impact and Wrexham will be watching closely as Wycombe face Rotherham on Tuesday night.

Phil Parkinson on Wrexham dressing room

Wrexham certainly couldn’t afford to lose on Saturday.

The defeat at Reading left Wrexham in real danger of falling six points behind Wycombe in just a matter of days.

Parkinson will be delighted with Saturday’s win but knows that Wycombe can move level on points again with a win on Tuesday.

That just shows that there will be more twists and turns to come as the League One promotion race enters its final stretch.

Parkinson is as level-headed as they come and he summed up his mindset when speaking to Wrexham’s official YouTube channel after Saturday’s victory.

Parkinson admitted that his message to the Wrexham staff was to turn the music off in the dressing room after the win.

The Wrexham boss doesn’t want his side getting too excited just yet, hammering home that nothing was won with Saturday’s victory.

“I just said to the staff then, let’s turn the music off in the dressing room, let’s make sure we’re not over-celebrating here,” said Parkinson.

“It’s a good win for us, but there’s a lot of work to be done,” he added.

Wrexham face interesting League One run-in

Rob McElhenney fancies promotion for Wrexham this season and there will be many fans who feel similarly.

Wrexham have just nine games to play now with 27 points on offer for Parkinson and co.

There may be some dropped points along the way and Wrexham’s next task is facing Stockport County.

The two sides know each other so well from rises up the leagues in recent years and County will be desperate to close the gap to Wrexham in the promotion race.

Wrexham face a handful of sides battling for League One survival with Exeter City, Cambridge United, Burton Albion, Wigan Athletic and Bristol Rovers after Stockport.

That is the key run; those sides are all in the bottom nine right now and Wrexham need to rack up the points against those sides.

Blackpool and Lincoln City are stuck in mid-table but come either side of a very tricky home game against a resurgent Charlton Athletic side.

Wrexham have a real chance at a third promotion in a row and Parkinson will look to use Saturday’s game to spark one final push – without celebrating too much.
