Wrexham faced Dutch side Groningen in their final pre-season friendly.
A Wrexham XI were defeated 1-0 by Groningen in the first game of the day at the club’s training ground before the second match was held at the stadium in front of fans.
Phil Parkinson handed debuts to Lewis O’Brien and Josh Windass in midfield and Liberato Cacace played at left wing back.
Wrexham fell behind early in the game when a turnover in midfield allowed the Dutch to slip a through ball behind the defence and Arthur Okonkwo could not prevent Van der Werff from slamming the ball past him.
The equaliser came minutes later as George Dobson’s exquisite pass over the top of the defence was volleyed into the far corner over his shoulder from Windass for his first goal in the red shirt.
A breakdown in communication between Okonkwo and Dan Scarr saw the defender lift a header over the Wrexham keeper and Willumson tucked home just before the break.
The Red Dragons tried to create chances to get back in the game during the second half but failed to find a way past a well-organised side before a late strike from a corner sealed a 3-1 win for the home side.

Wrexham player ratings vs Groningen
Wrexham finish their pre-season campaign with a defeat but will be pleased for the competitive run out, here’s how the players rated in the clash vs Groningen.
Arthur Okonkwo – 4
Not the most convincing performance from Wrexham’s number one following his nervy tour down under. Breakdown in communication with Scarr for the second goal and won’t be pleased at getting beat at his near post for the opener.
Max Cleworth – 6
Solid performance as always from the Wrexham defender, comfortable on the ball and is more than ready for his first Championship campaign.
Dan Scarr – 5
At fault for the second goal alongside Okonkwo as his header looped over the keeper and into the path of the Groningen forward.
Thomas O’Connor – 6
Read the game well throughout and made some vital defensive interceptions. Showed his excellent range of passing from the back.
Ryan Barnett – 6
Lucky not be sent off in the first half when he brought down the Groningen forward following a long punt from Wrexham’s corner. Looked a constant threat down the right flank.
Liberato Cacace – 7
Looked strong and energetic down the left flank, had a real eye to get forward which is something for fans to look for this season.
Matty James – 7
A typical performance from the experienced midfielder in front of the back four, tidied up well and kept possession when he had it.
George Dobson – 7
Full of energy in midfield and showed his wonderful range of passing for the opening goal with an excellent ball over the top for Windass.
Lewis O’Brien – 8
Full of energy and quality. Wrexham commentator described him as having the stature of Andy Cannon and energy of Ollie Rathbone and he was the driving force in midfield.
Josh Windass – 8
Not a bad introduction to the Wrexham fans. His volley coming over his shoulder from a pass of over 50 yards was simply exquisite and showed the incredible technique he will bring to the side.
Ryan Hardie – 6
Offers a real threat in behind with his pace and movement, still coming to grips with his first touch and decision making in front of goal but a positive display from the centre forward.
Substitutes-
Aaron James – N/A
Came on for O’Connor with ten minutes remaining.
