Wrexham clashed with Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand as their pre-season tour came to its conclusion.

Phil Parkinson was looking for an improved performance from the defeat in Sydney and started the game with Ryan Hardie and Harry Ashfield in attack.

The first half ended goalless as both teams struggled to carve out any real clear-cut chances in what was a frantic encounter.

After making ten changes at half time, Luke Flowerdew gave Phoenix the lead three minutes into the second half as Arthur Okonkwo fumbled a cross into his path.

Parkinson’s side huffed and puffed but couldn’t find an equaliser and the Red Dragons suffered back to back defeats in their pre-season preparations.

Wrexham player ratings vs Wellington Phoenix

Wrexham end the tour with a 1-0 defeat. Here is how the Wrexham players rated in the clash with Wellington Phoenix.

Arthur Okonkwo – 3

A quiet first half but the goalkeeper will be bitterly disappointed with his part in the Phoenix opening goal as an innocuous cross was fumbled into the path of Flowerdew.

Max Cleworth – 5

Had a tough encounter up against the youngster Luke Brooke-Smith but showed his resilience and determination to eventually stifle the threat.

Dan Scarr – 6

Dominant in the air as always and had to help Cleworth on a number of occasions up against the lively Brooke-Smith.

Lewis Brunt – 6

Defended well and drove out of defence with the ball when the space was in front of him.

Ryan Longman – 6

Wrexham’s main attacking outlet once again, drove at the full back at every opportunity.

James McClean – 5

A quiet display from the skipper but showed his experience in snuffing out a dangerous Wellington counter attack before half time.

Matty James – 6

Used his intelligence in a congested midfield to be first to loose balls and sustain Wrexham attacks.

Elliot Lee – 7

Struggled to find space and get on the ball in the first half. However, showed his threat after the break from deep when he saw a header crash against the bar from ten yards out.

Thomas O’Connor – 6

Neat and tidy in a defensive midfield role alongside James.

Harry Ashfield – 7

Should have scored in the early exchanges but snatched at a chance from a goalkeeping error. Showed some nice touches once again and doesn’t mind receiving the ball under pressure.

Ryan Hardie – 5

Ran the channels all game but looked isolated at times with the service into him lacking.

Substitutes-

Callum Burton – 5

Didn’t have a great deal to do coming on to replace Okonkwo.

Aaron James – 5

Solid enough in his defensive work as the team looked for an equaliser.

Eoghan O’Connell – 5

Prevented any Phoenix counter attacks as bodies pushed forward late in the game.

Ryan Barnett – 5

Produced a number of dangerous crosses in search of the equaliser.

George Dobson – 5

His usual energetic self when he came on.

George Evans – 5

Marshalled the midfield from deep when he came on but couldn’t ignite an equaliser.

Sebastian Revan – 5

Beat his full back regularly but couldn’t find that quality final ball.

Jacob Mendy – 5

Struggled to make any real impact after coming on.

Alex Moore – 5

Youngster will be delighted at getting his first minutes of the tour. Worked hard.

Ollie Palmer – 5

Had a goal disallowed for handball after a fine finish.

Modou Faal – 6

Looked lively when he came on and used his physicality to trouble the Phoenix defence.
