Wrexham star Luke Young has admitted the 5-0 defeat to Stockport at the weekend was a huge ‘wake up call’ and a ‘step backwards’.
Wrexham‘s good run came to a jarring halt at the weekend, as the Reds were hammered 5-0 by Stockport County at Edgeley Park on Saturday. The Dragons were on a seven-match unbeaten run in League Two, however, the emphatic defeat is a serious reminder that there’s a lot to improve on.

Stockport thrash Wrexham at Edgeley Park
Wrexham found themselves three goals down before half-time against Stockport, leaving them a mountain to climb in the second half.
However, things went from bad to worse as the home team added another two goals to compound the visitor’s misery.
Isaac Olaofe’s registered a hat-trick, while Louie Barry and substitute Paddy Madden also chipped in with goals.
Wrexham star admits team has ‘taken a step backwards’ after 5-0 defeat to Stockport
The 5-0 defeat is manager Phil Parkinson‘s heaviest defeat since he took charge at the Racecourse in July 2021.
Wrexham have now conceded five goals in three league matches this season, and it’s clear there’s defensive frailties hampering the side.
Wrexham star Luke Young admitted the defeat is a ‘wake-up call’ and a ‘step backwards.’ He told The Athletic: “This was a bad day at the office. But I have no doubt in my mind – and I back everyone in that dressing room on this – that we will put this right, starting on Monday.
“The standard has gone up (since winning promotion) and we have had to raise our game. Until Stockport, we were slowly adapting to the step up and slowly finding our feet. This has been a step backwards and something of a wake-up call.”

Phil Parkinson – first half ‘as bad as he can remember’
After the game, the boss said: “It’s as bad a first half as I can remember us playing in terms of all the fundamentals in football. They were sharper and quicker than us.
“So many times we gave the ball away cheaply in the back third and middle third and put ourselves under pressure.
“Today we were sloppy in everything we did and we’ve got to take our medicine today.”
Reflecting on the defeat, he told The Leader: “We have gone from last week putting in a really good performance all-round from one to 11, to a really poor performance from one to 11 this week. We have got to look for reasons for that.
“We had a chat at half-time about what we felt we needed to do and then we conceded the fourth goal.
“Then we conceded a fifth which is just too soft.
“I was as disappointed with that goal, even though the game was over at that point, as any of the others.”
Wrexham have a chance to put things right when they take on Crewe Alexandra at the Racecourse on Saturday.
