Wycombe Wanderers were left in awe of Wrexham star who was brilliant in 1-0 victory, it’s not Sam Smith

Wrexham were looking to secure a huge victory over their promotion rivals, Wycombe Wanderers, on March 15th.

It’s been an interesting seven days for the Red Dragons, who were given a major boost last weekend when they picked up a win over Rotherham United while Wycombe dropped points to Peterborough.

Wrexham then had a great chance to overtake the Chariboys in the table on Tuesday when they faced Reading.

But the Welsh outfit ended up losing that meeting 2-0 and, in turn, sat behind Wycombe prior to kick-off on Saturday.

While the Red Dragons have now played a game extra, a win over the weekend would have seen Phil Parkinson’s men move back inside the top two for at least seven days.

When all was said and done, Wrexham beat Wycombe 1-0, thanks to a 78th-minute goal from Sam Smith.

Wycombe Wanderers praised Wrexham star

Wrexham fans praised Smith while also highlighting that the striker needs more support up front.

Though it was the January addition who stole the headlines in the huge victory, another player deserves a lot of credit.

Wycombe tested the Wrexham defence a fair bit toward the end of the tie and probably would have scored if not for the heroics of Arthur Okonkwo.

The shot-stopper made a number of crucial saves, two of which saw him earn praise from Wycombe’s official X/Twitter account.

The club’s first tweet about the Wrexham goalkeeper came in the 77th minute after a top save to deny Caleb Taylor.

The former Arsenal man was not done there, however, springing into action five minutes later to make another brilliant stop, once again leaving Wycombe stunned.

They wrote: “Okonkwo again! Udoh does well to hold it up, McCleary feeds Berry, and his low shot is brilliantly tipped away.”

Arthur Okonkwo stats as Wrexham beat Wycombe Wanderers

The goalkeeper has had his ups and downs in the 2024/25 season so far.

Okonkwo had a spell on the sidelines midway through the campaign due to injury and looked a bit shaky on his return.

He was benched for three league games in February but has improved a fair bit since his return and was immense against Wycombe.

Wrexham’s biggest strength this season has been their defence, and now Okonkwo is back to his best, that will hopefully be the case in the remaining nine games of 2024/25.
