Wrexham beat Welsh rivals Newport County in League Two this afternoon.

Wrexham remain in 3rd place of the League Two table after a comfortable 2-0 win over Newport County at a packed out Racecourse Ground today.

Phil Parkinson‘s side played in front of a temporary Kop stand which added 1,800 extra fans to the attendance; their biggest home attendance since 2007.

And it was a memorable day with Wrexham beating Welsh rivals Newport County 2-0 owing to goals from James Jones and Elliot Lee in the second half.

The Dragons have now lost just one of their last 12 League Two fixtures and are back on level points with Barrow in 2nd.

Here are three things we learned about Wrexham after today’s win…

Wrexham are a team for big occasions

2023 has been a big year with plenty of big moments for Wrexham.

But they continue to prove that they are a team for the big occasions and today’s game was another one of those.

With a bumper crowd and against Welsh rivals Newport County, who were definitely the underdogs going into this game, Wrexham provided.

Today’s game could easily have been a banana skin for Parkinson’s side but they delivered a routine performance.

Arthur Okonkwo is a key player

The 22-year-old returned to the XI today after missing three games with a jaw injury.

And it was a welcome return to the side too; Okonkwo is a very safe pair of hands and having him in the side gives Wrexham a reliable name in goal, with his passing game a big plus to the side as well.

Parkinson will be praying that he stays fit and can see out the whole season as Wrexham’s no1.

No stopping Elliot Lee

Lee continues to shine for Wrexham in League Two this season.

The 29-year-old now has 13 goals to his name this season, with three of those coming in his last four performances in the fourth tier.

Playing in a central midfield three, Lee is given license to roam forward and create scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates, and having someone with his quality and experience in that role is vital to Wrexham’s success.

He’s another player who Parkinson will be praying can stay injury-free throughout the campaign, as he could well be a big factor in whether or not the Dragons go up this season.
