Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney deserve immense credit for how they have taken Wrexham to new heights.

The ‘Welcome to Wrexham‘ documentary has opened up a brand-new world for the town in Wales, making them one of the most well-known teams on the planet.

Countless A-list celebrities have made the trip to the Racecourse Ground following Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s takeover but most importantly, Wrexham as a club have improved massively.

Gone are the days of being unable to pay player’s wages and struggling to fill their ground to watch some pretty poor performances in the National League.

Wrexham are now in League One and, with a bit of luck, could be in the Championship for the first time ever since it was rebranded when 2025/26 gets underway.

While it’s largely all been rosy since the North Americans came to town, there have been a couple of poor decisions made.

Billy Waters is Wrexham’s most disappointing transfer under Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney

One of those involved what is arguably the biggest transfer flop of the Reynolds and McElhenney era.

As they eyed promotion from the National League, Wrexham were looking to strengthen their forward line in March 2023.

To do so, they signed Billy Waters from Barrow on the 22nd of the month for an undisclosed transfer fee.

Waters had previously impressed in both the National League and League Two and has managed to score a total of 77 goals and provide 18 assists throughout his career.

However, his time at Wrexham proved to be an unrivaled failure, making just eight appearances and not scoring a single goal.

What Billy Waters is doing after leaving Wrexham

With things really not working out at Wrexham, the forward was loaned to Doncaster Rovers in the second half of 2023/24.

He was then shipped out once more during the 2024 summer transfer window, linking up with Halifax Town on a short-term basis until January.

He returned to the Racecourse last month but Waters joined Oldham Athletic on a free transfer on January 16th.

The 30-year-old has made six appearances for Oldham so far, scoring one goal.
