Andy Morrell offers ‘brilliant’ verdict on Wrexham’s Ollie Rathbone after beating Mansfield Town

Wrexham produced a big performance in the League One promotion race, beating Mansfield Town 2-1 away from home.

Wycombe Wanderers held a five-point lead over Wrexham heading into the weekend fixtures.

The Chairboys had taken advantage of Wrexham’s defeat to Leyton Orient by beating Bristol Rovers last week.

Wycombe could only draw with Wigan Athletic on Saturday though, opening up a chance for Wrexham to close the gap again.

Phil Parkinson’s side got the job done with Max Cleworth again showed his goalscoring class with a second-half winner.

Wrexham are now just three points behind Wycombe with Parkinson no doubt delighted at that response after losing to Orient.

Andy Morrell on Ollie Rathbone

Cleworth grabbed the headlines with his seventh League One goal of the season but this was a real team effort.

Parkinson loved Sebastian Revan’s performance with the 21-year-old coming in for a rare start at left wing back.

Andy Morrell’s attention instead went towards midfielder Ollie Rathbone as he turned in yet another impressive display.

Wrexham paid a ‘significant’ fee for Rathbone and he struggled for starts in the final stages of the season.

Right now though, it’s difficult to imagine anybody but Rathbone being the first name on the Wrexham team sheet.

Rathbone has been in sensational goalscoring form but this time he was in the business of setting goals up as Calum Macdonald turned his fizzed cross into the net for an own goal.

After the game, Wrexham hero Morrell told Wrexham’s official YouTube channel that he felt Rathbone was simply ‘brilliant’ against Mansfield.

Morrell suggested that Rathbone is in ‘sensational’ form but he is just so good right now that his performance on Sunday somewhat went under the radar.

“I think Rathbone has been sensational, I thought he was brilliant today and we don’t even talk about him today because he’s that level of standard that we expect from him, and he was that good,” said Morrell.

One of the features of Wrexham’s performance was fine link-up play down the left side between Rathbone and Revan.

The pair dovetailed nicely going forward and showed a great understanding together.

That perhaps should not be a surprise; Revan and Rathbone played together at Rotherham United last season and will have built up some level of rapport.

Their connection certainly looked promising on Sunday afternoon and that is something Parkinson may well need to keep in mind moving forward.

James McClean should be back soon and can feasibly come back in at left wing back or as Wrexham’s left-sided central midfielder.

If the Irishman is missing though, Parkinson may well fancy going back to Revan and Rathbone together on the left having looked impressive against Mansfield.
