Humphery Ker, Wrexham’s Executive Director, has explained how Rob McElhenney chose to buy the Red Dragons ahead of other clubs.

Wrexham were taken over by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney back in February 2021 and haven’t looked back since.

The two Hollywood actors are hugely passionate about the club and regularly attend games or watch from America.

This is clear in the wake of last night’s dramatic win which Reynolds reacted to on X. Also from an early season joke from Reynolds as he suggested in satire that he would trade his children to fix issues at the club.

However, with little previous connection to Wrexham, the decision to buy the club was interesting and now the club CEO has given input on how the Red Dragons were chosen.

How Rob McElhenney chose Wrexham

Speaking on BBC Scotland’s Sacked in the Morning podcast, Humphery Ker explained the process behind Wrexham being chosen.

“So right at the jump, Rob said, well, what about a club in Ireland? Because his family are from Ireland, or from Northern Ireland, or from Scotland.”

Ker continued to explain that in Scotland, Arbroath was considered but rejected in the end.

“So ultimately, I said, if you went to Arbroath and we injected money and built that team and you got into the Premiership pretty quickly, you would then run up against Celtic and Rangers. But the speed at which you would get from Arbroath now to a sort of mid-table Scottish Premiership team would be quite quick.

“And then you would have this problem where you just get hammered all the time by the big boys there. It would just be tricky.”

Continuing it was explained that Irish clubs were also considered to be bought.

“And to take Ireland, for an example. If you go with Dundalk or someone like that, very quickly you would become the unassailable champions of the League of Ireland.

“And then what do you do? You go into the Champions League and get battered in the Champions League by a Greek team and then that’s sort of the cycle year on year.

“So, ultimately, we were like, we’ve got to do England or the English system.”

How high can Wrexham go?

Wrexham look in a good position to achieve at the very least a playoff place this season.

This would – touch wood – lead to a second consecutive promotion and League One football next season.

If this happened, the star-studded owners would see their team two divisions from the promised land of the Premier League.

Obviously so far has been successful, but the way things are going it looks incredibly likely that future success will also occur.
