‘Difficult for ourselves’: Former £5m man on ‘the Wrexham way’ to secure wins

New Wrexham signing, James McClean has admitted sometimes his side make it hard for themselves but it says everything about their character.

So far this season Wrexham have scored 9 goals after the 85th minute and have only lost two games.

It is safe to say Phil Parkinson’s side are exciting to watch but can sometimes be too open and concede too many.

Some goals have been consolations or just added security. On the flip side, 11 points have been earned through these late goals.

These additional points are the difference between being in third place and 19th.

What has James McClean said?

This kind of football has almost become associated with the Red Dragons over the past few seasons.

While speaking with the Leader, McClean agreed with this sentiment: “It seems to be the Wrexham way. It’s not dull, that’s for sure.”

That is one thing Parkinson’s football can not be accused of. With 30 goals scored in fifteen games, going forward Wrexham are top class.

The downfall is the defensive side. With 27 goals conceded with only four other teams conceding the same or more.

With that being said the Irishman believes it can be righted: “Not only the quality we have in the squad but it shows the character we have to keep going and get late goals and late winners.

“It’s a credit to the lads.”

The late winners are good fun, everyone loves some 90+ minute limbs at The Racecourse, but it can’t be sustainable.

McClean does believe it has to change: “It would be nice to have a few boring, more comfortable games but as long as we are winning it doesn’t really matter.

“We need to make it more difficult for ourselves than we should have but it is tough when teams come and sit behind the ball, and try and make it scrappy.”

If the late goals can keep going all season long then the club are still going to succeed. The worry comes if those goals dry up.

Hopefully, some more consistency can come and goals can be scored earlier. For everyone’s sake.
