EFL establish James McClean rule
McElhenney and Reynolds aren’t the only Wrexham figures to receive stick from other fans.
Captain James McClean has been the subject of abuse from fans for many years now, long before he even signed for Wrexham.
McClean has made it clear that he will not wear a poppy as part of the Remembrance Day tributes.
This has been the case for a long, long time now with McClean firm in his beliefs.
That has made McClean a target for rival fans and the EFL have decided to make a move.
The Daily Mail report that McClean will now have permission to leave the pitch via the shortest route to the tunnel.
Players are now encouraged to leave the field at the nearest point and walk around to the tunnel in order to speed up the game.
However, fans have thrown objects at McClean as he walked around the pitch and that means he will be allowed to head for the tunnel.
The decision is understood to have been made after talks between the EFL, the PGMOL and Wrexham.
Player safety is paramount and this step will hopefully reduce the chances of McClean encountering problems from rival fans.
Wrexham fans will always support McClean
Some fanbases may not like McClean, whether it’s for his approach as a player or because of his personal beliefs.
Wrexham seems to be a perfect home for McClean though with fans right behind him – on and off the pitch.
Rob McElhenney has admitted his love for McClean, noting that the Wrexham star reminds him of old friends in Philadelphia.
Ryan Reynolds is a big fan of McClean too, praising his ‘scrappy’ nature on the pitch.
McClean never seems to let outside noise bother him but he can certainly count on the love and support around Wrexham.
