Former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Carlton Palmer believes Wrexham have just made a ‘real statement of intent’ in the League One promotion race.
Wrexham have been tipped by many to challenge towards the upper echelons of League One despite just winning promotion from League Two.
With ambitious owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds at the helm, there’s no wonder the Reds are being tipped for greatness following the signings of Arthur Okonkwo, Lewis Brunt and most recently, George Dobson.
Phil Parkinson swatted away Championship competition to land Okonkwo permanently, Brunt was captured from Leicester City while Dobson was a shrewd signing on a free transfer.
Parkinson has significantly bolstered in goal, centre-back and midfield with those additions, while EFL pundit Carlton Palmer believes one of those signings shows they mean business.
Carlton Palmer thinks George Dobson’s arrival is a ‘real statement of intent’ from Wrexham
A graduate of West Ham’s academy, Dobson captained Charlton Athletic last term and played 43 times in League One.
In the January transfer window, the 26-year-old agreed to a pre-contract with Hungarian side Fehervar, although he pulled out of that agreement due to personal circumstances.

Now at Wrexham, where he claims they’re a club everyone wants to be at, Dobson is ready to help the Reds challenge for a third consecutive promotion.
Speaking to Football League World, Palmer thinks landing the former Addicks captain is a ‘statement of intent’ and a great piece of business due to his attributes, including his leadership qualities, defensive work rate and positive injury record.
Palmer said: “This is a real statement of intent, Wrexham are hoping to add another promotion next season.
“The Addicks wanted to keep him, and Phil Parkinson has come out and said that they’re very strong in midfield, but they’re expecting a tough season next season, and they need quality.
“Dobson is one of those that rarely gets injured, plays a lot of football, has been captain of Charlton. A very, very combative, good midfield player, it’s another bit of good recruitment from Wrexham in their quest to go again next season and get promotion.”
George Dobson’s 23/24 Charlton statistics
Having amassed 265 appearances in League One, Wrexham have acquired a player who knows the league inside out and that is a similar case with Andy Cannon and Elliot Lee, a pair who made themselves undroppable last term.
For Charlton, the bullish midfield talent played in the heart of a midfield three – a similar role to what George Evans plays for the Reds – screening the defence and winning possession back for his team.
A tough tackler in the engine room but also an excellent distributor of the ball, Dobson can play an advanced role as a number eight or number six, with the statistics underscoring his importance to Charlton.
| George Dobson 2023/24 League One statistics | Statistic |
| Appearances | 43 |
| Goals | 2 |
| Assists | 4 |
| Big chances created | 5 |
| Key passes per game | 1.3 |
| Interceptions per game | 1.3 |
| Tackles per game | 2.9 |
| Balls recovered per game | 7.1 |
| Successful dribbles per game | 1 (62%) |
Taking a look at his statistics, the Englishman is a ball-winning machine, whose primary focus is to protect the defence and lend possession to the more creative players around him.
Parkinson was crying out for a bulldozer in midfield and in Dobson, he has someone who will ensure Wrexham can win the key battles centrally.
