Ex-Premier League director hails Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds but urges ‘patience’ over Wrexham project

Wrexham are pushing towards the Championship with Phil Parkinson hoping to land a third straight promotion.

We now have a rather rare situation this week – Wrexham have no midweek game.

The hectic schedule of late has seen Wrexham play on Saturday and then either Tuesday or Wednesday for weeks on end.

Sam Smith is excited to have a full week of training for the first time since joining Wrexham from Reading in January.

Wrexham will then take on a familiar foe in Stockport County this weekend, but there will be eyes on Wycombe Wanderers.

Wrexham beat Wycombe over the weekend to go second in League One but could be leapfrogged by the Chairboys if they beat Rotherham United on Tuesday night.

Stuart Webber on Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds

The end of the League One season is now in sight and Wrexham are looking to get over the line and secure that third promotion on the bounce.

Wrexham could be a Championship club next season and Stuart Webber has been offering his view.

Webber feels that Wrexham need signings this summer in order to compete at Championship level, highlighting the significant jump in quality.

The former Wrexham youth coach has also told ESPN that he thinks owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have really ‘delivered’ at the STōK Cae Ras.

Webber noted that McElhenney and Reynolds have done everything they set out to do, fulfilling promises that other owners have shirked in the past.

Webber praised the Hollywood duo for being ‘really connected’ to Wrexham, but feels that the club needs ‘patience’ going forward.

Formerly Norwich City’s sporting director in the Premier League, Webber fears ‘harsh lessons’ if Wrexham win promotion having moved from the National League to the top end of League One so quickly.

“One thing I’d say about the owners is that everything they said they were going to do, they’ve done,” said Webber.

“They haven’t been like fake owners, which often clubs have had, who start off with a load of enthusiasm and then the money runs out and then you never hear from them again.

“Rob and Ryan have delivered and really connected with the club, but if Wrexham are promoted, I hope the project gets the patience that it needs and they don’t get some harsh lessons as a Championship club,” he added.

Wrexham infrastructure still being improved

Wrexham have enjoyed so much success on the pitch and, even if promotion doesn’t materialise this season, Phil Parkinson would expect to be in the mix again next term.

The rapid rise of the club needs to be mirrored off the pitch though with areas of infrastructure needing improvement.

Populous are working with Wrexham to redevelop the Kop Stand with official designs emerging earlier this year.

The temporary stand in place now will be removed and a new 5,500-capacity stand will take its place to modernise the STōK Cae Ras.

Wrexham will also invest in a new pitch this summer with Michael Williamson keen to bring the club in line with top European sides.

McElhenney and Reynolds are paying attention to the stadium, the pitch, the training ground, the youth development – all with sustained success in mind.

Those aspects will help Wrexham if promotion is secured and hopefully present a platform to kick on and continue progressing in the future.
