Wrexham sit second in the League One table as Phil Parkinson prepares for another meeting with Stockport County this weekend.

Wrexham beat Wycombe Wanderers 1-0 on Saturday afternoon to go back into second place in the League One table.

This was arguably the biggest game of the season with the two sides level on points before kick off.

Sam Smith’s stunning winner handed Wrexham the win though as he volleyed home in style.

Phil Parkinson hailed Smith for that strike as Wrexham’s automatic promotion hopes were given a major boost.

Wycombe would leapfrog Wrexham again on Tuesday night though with the Chairboys facing Rotherham United.

Sam Smith on Wrexham rarity

Wrexham will be watching that game with interest before hosting Stockport County this weekend.

Wrexham may well be back down to third by the time that game kicks off but Parkinson will hope that Saturday’s win provides real momentum.

Goalscorer Smith has commented on that Stockport clash, suggesting that it’s a ‘big one’ at the STōK Cae Ras.

Smith crucially pointed out that he will now have a full week of training for the first time at Wrexham.

Wrexham signed Smith from Reading in January as the striker completed a club-record move.

Wrexham’s hectic schedule means that Smith has remarkably yet to experience a full week of training in North Wales.

Since Smith’s debut at Crawley Town on February 1, Wrexham have played six midweek games across League One and the EFL Trophy.

There was a week gap between facing Port Vale and Bolton Wanderers in February, but there still wasn’t a full week of training due to the weekend interruption.

Smith now feels that it’s ‘nice’ to finally have that full week of training to gear up for Stockport with Wrexham eyeing another win.

“We take it game by game, it’s a big one next weekend now but it’s nice to have no Tuesday fixture,” said Smith on Wrexham’s official YouTube channel.

“I think, since I’ve been here, it’s been Saturday-Tuesday, so we’ve not been able to train. We’ll have a good week of training and we can rest up and go into Saturday fresh and try to get the three points,” he added.

Wrexham to lock horns with Stockport County once again

Wrexham’s rise under Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds has been incredible but Stockport have been right there on a similar journey.

Wrexham missed out on automatic promotion from the National League in 2022 with Stockport claiming top spot.

The two teams were reunited in 2023 as Wrexham joined Stockport in League Two, with the sides exchanging victories last season.

Wrexham and Stockport won promotion together last season and are now fighting for promotion from League One together.

Stockport beat Wrexham 1-0 earlier this season but Parkinson and his new striker Smith will be keen to hit back with a win over County this weekend.

Stockport’s Callum Connolly feels that Wrexham is now a rivalry for County and we anticipate a red-hot atmosphere at the STōK Cae Ras this weekend.
