Ex-Wycombe star says one thing could give Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham boost in promotion race

Wrexham scored a huge victory over promotion rivals Wycombe Wanderers this past weekend.

Wrexham had slipped out of the automatic promotion places following some questionable results in the early stages of 2025.

However, the Red Dragons’ away form has improved a great deal this year and continued on Saturday during the meeting with Wycombe Wanderers.

Wrexham beat Wycombe 1-0 thanks to Sam Smith’s 78th-minute strike, seeing Phil Parkinson’s side move up to second in League One for the time being.

However, the Chairboys still have a game in hand to play, which takes place against Rotherham United on Tuesday evening.

Win that and it will once again be Wrexham who go into the weekend’s action needing at least a point to climb back into the top two.

Wrexham advantage over Wycombe in League One promotion race

On paper, Wycombe should still be favourites to go up alongside Birmingham City.

They have a game in hand and a much better goal difference despite currently trailing Wrexham.

However, one of the club’s former stars has now named the advantage Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’ club have over Wycombe.

Speaking to Football League World, Joe Jacobson said the Welsh outfit have the psychological advantage as right now, it is them who have the momentum.

He said: “Wrexham have now got the momentum, although Wycombe still have a game in hand and play Rotherham away tonight, so if they win their game in hand, they go back above Wrexham on goal difference.

Jacobson continued: “I would say that psychologically, Wrexham have the momentum for the remaining games.”

Wrexham League One fixtures compared to Wycombe

As already mentioned, Wycombe are next in action on March 18th against Rotherham, who Wrexham recently beat 1-0.

Mike Dodds’ men then don’t have a game this coming weekend, while the Hollywood-owned club travel to Stockport County.

This means as long as they pick up three points on Saturday, Wrexham will end the week second.

On paper, Wrexham might have a slightly easier run of games to end the season but it does look as though the battle for promotion will go down to the final day.
