Wrexham captain Luke Young has praised Ben Foster following his recent retirement from the game, expressing his delight with how his spell at the club went.

Foster, who came out of retirement to join Wrexham last season, helped Phil Parkinson’s side achieve promotion from the National League but decided to retire again after a shaky start to life in League Two saw him concede 10 goals in two home games.

Young has praised the efforts of Foster, whose iconic penalty save against Notts County played a major part in Wrexham’s promotion back to League Two.

“It was a shock. His decision came all of a sudden and one I wasn’t expecting,” Young told The Leader.

“But it’s a sign of what a great bloke he is and fair play to him for being so honest.

“I won’t forget him and who will ever forget that penalty save against Notts County?

“I’d just like to wish him all the best in what he does in the future with his podcast and cycling.”

A leadership void?

Although there are a lot of strong characters and quality players within the Wrexham squad, losing Foster means that the club will lose a lot of experience, and he was a player that everyone seemingly got along with.

Whilst the likes of Young, Elliot Lee, Mark Howard and James McClean are experienced themselves, Foster’s departure may be quite noticeable initially, and it will be up to the rest of the squad to step up and fill the leadership void he left behind.

Foster’s decision came early enough in the season not to disrupt Parkinson’s plans too much, and if the club choose to bring a new goalkeeper in, they now have some time to do so before the transfer window closes.
