Since the Hollywood takeover, Wrexham and their rise through the Football League has seen the club’s fanbase rapidly grow globally.

Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney made huge headlines when they shockingly revealed they wanted to own the North Wales club in 2020.

A few seasons on, Wrexham are set to return to League One action for the first time in 19 years, with a fanbase that is constantly growing.

The owners have brought a global appeal to the club but have maintained their principles of respecting the club’s history, culture, and community.

The ownership’s ambition is clear to see and has made Wrexham a household name in America.

Recently, American Football star Tom Brady, a minority investor in Birmingham City, saw his club’s request to play their home fixture against Wrexham in America immediately rejected by the EFL.

Reynolds quickly dismissed the idea that Wrexham were consulted and reassured the fanbase that he was committed to the principles they set out when arriving in North Wales.

Darren Anderton full of praise for Wrexham under Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney

Former Tottenham Hotspur star Darren Anderton now lives in America and has seen the impact of Reynolds and McEllhenney’s ownership of Wrexham, over in the States.

Speaking to GOAL about the Red Dragons, Anderton said: “It’s definitely bizarre!

“When a world superstar, a celebrity like that comes in, you are probably very nervous around them and just go with it.

“At the level they were playing at, they probably couldn’t believe their luck. It has been an amazing story.

“Being in America, when I say that I used to play football, people always ask me about Ted Lasso or Wrexham! It’s pretty ridiculous, but I love the story.

“Finishing my career at Bournemouth, I know where that story can go. What a great story.”

Why US ownership in English Football is a positive

In recent years, there has been scrutiny surrounding the increasing ownership and investment from the USA in English football.

Fears consist of commercial issues taking priority and potential fixtures being moved away from the local fans. However, Reynolds and McElhenney’s ownership of Wrexham thus far is a perfect example of how US investment can be a positive for British clubs.

The Hollywood owners have had a dramatic effect at the Racecourse with surging interest in the club with community at the core of its culture. The actors have respected the fans wishes and have always attempted to be transparent with the fanbase.

The docuseries ‘Welcome to Wrexham‘ has not only showcased the club’s history to a global audience, but has often featured local fans and their stories to promote what being part of the club is truly about.

Heading into the League One campaign the fanbase can be excited and grateful that the ownership has the club’s best interest at heart, and truly wants to see the club continue its journey.
