Wrexham have been shown sympathy after a brilliant showing against Southampton, despite being handed a defeat.

Wrexham’s 2025/26 Championship season has kicked off, and their first contest ended in rather dramatic fashion.

Despite holding a lead for the majority of the tie, Wrexham suffered a defeat to Southampton after two late Saints goals cruelly condemned Phil Parkinson’s side.

The Red Dragons suffered an eventual defeat at St Mary’s, but there was plenty to shout about for Wrexham fans, with Parkinson and his team showing that they can perform against high-level Championship sides.

There were many positives about the game, and one former Premier League player has issued his verdict on the performance, highlighting the intricate details in which Wrexham were ‘terrific’.

Wrexham handed ‘terrific’ verdict by former Premier League star Tony Cascarino

Wrexham took many by surprise following the contest with Southampton, and whilst they left St Mary’s with zero points, Phil Parkinson will be able to pick plenty of positives from the game.

One former Premier League man, Tony Cascarino, was left in awe of Wrexham’s performance, having said, via TalkSPORT: “I thought Wrexham were terrific for long periods of the game.

“They have a slightly different structure to the way they play [than Southampton], they get the ball forward to Kieffer Moore, who held the ball up brilliantly.

“There’s people like Windass who join him and others, and I thought Wrexham were really worthy of their lead for large periods.

“Wrexham will feel hard done by.”

Josh Windass threatened in large spells during the first half, having scored from the penalty spot, whilst also going close after striking the woodwork.

Wrexham could become an attacking powerhouse

Wrexham suffered eventually on the defensive side in the defeat to Southampton, with Will Still’s side eventually battering down the hatches of the Red Dragons’ defence.

It can be argued that Wrexham need more recruitment in the back-line, which is why Phil Parkinson is keen to sign Jack Stephens from Sheffield United.

However, the signing of Josh Windass from Sheffield Wednesday has already proven to be a shrewd deal by the Red Dragons after the part he played in the clash with Southampton. The same can be said for Kieffer Moore, although he looks set to spend time on the sidelines after picking up an injury.

Wrexham may have been on the back foot in the second half, but that was against a side who will no doubt be in the conversation of promotion back to the Premier League. The Red Dragons will soon face lower-level sides, where they can look to show their true quality.
