Wrexham released a number of players after clinching promotion to League One and one of those players has finally found himself a new club.

Phil Parkinson had to make some tough decisions after guiding Wrexham to a second straight promotion.

Not everybody can stay on this Wrexham journey under Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, so some difficult exits were sanctioned at the end of the campaign.

Ben Tozer joined Forest Green Rovers whilst Luke Young was let go as his contract came to an end.

McElhenney was devastated to release Young, noting that the midfielder was actually his favourite player at Wrexham.

Those two players enjoyed key roles in Wrexham’s rise and another experienced player has finally secured a return to action.

Former Wrexham star joins non-league club

National League side Altrincham have now confirmed the signing of former Wrexham goalkeeper Rob Lainton.

The 35-year-old stopper was let go by Wrexham as his contract at the STōK Cae Ras expired.

Lainton spent six years as a Wrexham player having first joined on loan from Port Vale back in 2018.

The former Bolton Wanderers stopper racked up nearly 150 appearances for Wrexham but he has spent almost a year out of the game.

Lainton finally has a new home with the Ashton-under-Lyne-born goalkeeper heading back to the Manchester area with a move to Altrincham.

Remarkably, Lainton has gone straight into the Altrincham starting lineup to face Newcastle United Under-21’s in the National League Cup.

Wrexham fans will love seeing Lainton back in the game once again and will wish him lal the best with his move to the J. Davidson Stadium.

Rob Lainton țo play under Phil Parkinson

A strange quirk here is that Lainton’s move to Altrincham means that he is playing under Phil Parkinson once again.

Altrincham’s boss shares the same name as Wrexham chief Parkinson, a strange twist of fate for Lainton as he joins up with the Robins.

Lainton also joins a former Altrincham teammate with striker Jake Bickerstaff currently on loan at Altrincham from Wrexham.

Bickerstaff is in the starting lineup against Newcastle United Under-21’s too, so there is quite the Wrexham reunion going on under the other Phil Parkinson.
