Wrexham are competing in the second tier of English football for the first time in 43 years, and in preparation for this, they went out and signed 13 players.

These signings have seemingly had the desired impact, as the club are currently on a four-game unbeaten run in the Championship after Wrexham spent £33 million in the transfer market.

Phil Parkinson seemed to have found the formula for success in the first half of their draw with Birmingham City, as the hosts dominated proceedings.

Yet, they were pinned back in the second half, and a worrying Championship stat emerged for Wrexham after the result, which may explain why one former player expects this to be a ‘good season’ for the club.

Matt Jansen believes that a mid-table finish would be a ‘good season’ for Wrexham

Matt Jansen was a Wrexham player in 2009, playing three games for the Red Dragons in the Conference North, only scoring one goal; however, he will be more fondly remembered for his time at Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League.

Wrexham are currently occupying 18th in the Championship after their opening nine games of the campaign, with there being a hope that they could climb the table with several good results.

The former striker believes that the Red Dragons’ season will only be deemed a success if they manage to finish here in the league, as he explained to the Fearless in Devotion podcast in association with Palantir Financial Planning.

He said: “Originally, I thought they’d struggle, I really did. I think a mid-table finish would be a good season for Wrexham, and then building on that for the following season and trying to go a little bit better.”

Matt Jansen believes Wrexham could soon be a Premier League club

The ultimate goal of every club in the EFL is to earn promotion to the Premier League due to the financial reward of reaching the English top flight.

Wrexham are no different, and their owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac would hope they can achieve this sooner rather than later; however, Matt Jansen believes a sensible approach will allow them to achieve it.

The former Red Dragons player believes consistent investment over a period of time, building year upon year in the Championship, will allow them to do this.

There would be a risk in looking to invest too quickly, putting at risk the sustainability of the club and reversing some of the good work they did in the past few seasons.
