Wrexham and Ben Foster parted ways in 2023, shortly after the start of the 2023/24 season in League Two.

Ben Foster is a fan favourite among Wrexham supporters, despite only making 12 appearances for the club during his second spell at the Racecourse.

Spending time on loan at Wrexham early on in his career, Wrexham re-signed Foster on a free transfer to help them over the line in the 2022/23 National League season.

Foster landed another year-long deal but after four games in League Two, the former England shot-stopper called time on his career.

Now working as a club ambassador for Wrexham alongside his podcasting, Foster often talks about Wrexham.

Ben Foster knew he had to call time on his Wrexham career

Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast with Sam Allardyce, Foster was speaking about his time at Wrexham and how it all came to an end. Despite landing a deal for the 2023/24 season, Foster felt in his body that things weren’t quite right.

He explained: “Very quickly the season started. A couple goals went in in the second game and I thought, I’m sure I was saving that’. As a goalie, I know exactly where it’s going to hit on my glove and how much of a contact I’m going to get on it. Everything. And it just went in and I’m thinking, ‘That shouldn’t happen’.

“Anyway, it happened again in the second or third game, and I was just like, ‘This ain’t it’. The electricity had gone in my feet.”

What Ben Foster said immediately after leaving Wrexham

Officially announcing his retirement at Wrexham, Foster spoke very openly and honestly about his decision at the time.

Foster said he was retiring to give Wrexham a chance to replace him in the window, adding that he simply didn’t feel up to the job, as he mentioned above too.

The 42-year-old explained: “The honest truth is that my performances this season haven’t reached the level I demand of myself and I feel that now is the right time to retire.

“At the forefront of my mind when making this decision, was not only what was best for me but also the Club, and making the decision now gives the Club every opportunity to assess their options before the window closes. Wrexham will always have a special place in my heart.”

But Wrexham fans still see and hear plenty of Foster who regularly comments on all things Wrexham.
