Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have backed Wrexham brilliantly in League One and another promotion could be on the cards.

Wrexham completed a superb achievement this time a year ago, securing back-to-back promotions.

Phil Parkinson simply had to retool the Wrexham squad to cope with the demands of League One and improve his options.

Wrexham made eight signings last summer, headlined by Arthur Okonkwo joining permanently, George Dobson’s move from Charlton Athletic and significant cash deals for Ollie Rathbone and Modou Faal.

Parkinson then signed four free agents outside of the transfer window before securing three more signings in January.

Wrexham’s club record was broken on Sam Smith whilst Ryan Longman and Jay Rodriguez also joined, helping Parkinson push for a third straight promotion.

Wrexham agent fee spending emerges

Parkinson’s side sit second in the League One table, one point ahead of Wycombe Wanderers with four games to play.

Wrexham’s rise could bring a third straight promotion, and the backing from Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds has been key.

Wrexham spent around £2million on new signings last summer with another £2.5million coming in January.

That was nowhere near Birmingham City’s transfer spending, but Wrexham actually spent more than the Blues on agent fees.

The FA have published the figures spent by each club on agent fees for the 2024-25 season.

Wrexham spent £784,535 on agent fees between February 2, 2024 and February 3, 2025.

That ranks second in the League One table, behind only Huddersfield Town, who spent £1,160,403 on agent fees in the same period.

Wrexham spent £347,027 on agent fees in the 2023-24 League Two season, so the outlay more than doubled for life in League One.

Wages and agent fees will have been key to Wrexham’s rise, allowing Parkinson to sign key free agents such as Paul Mullin, Steven Fletcher and Elliot Lee, among others.

This rise in agent fee spending from division to division is just part of the journey through the leagues as the calibre of player Wrexham target rises.

So far, it all looks like money well spent for McElhenney and Reynolds, with another promotion hopefully just weeks away.

How Wrexham’s rivals compare in agent fees table

Birmingham City spent £589,728 on agent fees, which may come as a surprise given their enormous transfer outlay over the summer.

The Blues limited their payments to agents and ended up around £200,000 shy of Wrexham.

Wrexham’s main automatic promotion rivals are Wycombe Wanderers, who spent just £243,821 on agent fees.

Charlton Athletic and Stockport County spent just over £400,000 each, whilst Bolton Wanderers were closer to £500,000.

Wrexham’s tally was even higher than three Championship clubs – Oxford United, Portsmouth and Derby County – and just shy of Sheffield Wednesday.

The payments to agents tend to reach seven figures in the Championship, and Wrexham may well break that barrier if promotion is achieved in the coming weeks.
