Humphrey Ker shares what has been Wrexham’s ‘superpower’ since Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds takeover

It has been just over four years since Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took over the club and what a journey it has been so far.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds purchased Wrexham from the club’s Supporters Trust in February 2021.

Wrexham had enjoyed a tough decade or so thanks to poor ownership in the past that eventually led them to being stuck in the National League.

But after play-off heartbreak in their first season, Rob and Ryan watched on as Phil Parkinson guided to club to the league title in 2022/23.

Two years on, Wrexham could win promotion from League One as early as Saturday evening versus Charlton Athletic.

Humphrey Ker shares Wrexham’s ‘superpower’

It would require Wycombe Wanderers to lose their meeting and Wrexham to beat Charlton, but it’s still very possible.

Promotion in the next two weeks would be a historic achievement for Wrexham, with no side ever winning three in a row when starting in the National League or above.

There are a lot of factors behind Wrexham’s success over the last four seasons, including the pulling power of Rob and Ryan and the excellent work of manager Parkinson.

But when speaking on the Men In Blazers podcast this week, club chief Humphrey Ker suggested Wrexham’s ‘superpower’ has been the dressing room.

He stated: “It’s such a cliche, but that dressing room has been our superpower for four years, is how close they are and how well they get along, and how sort of serious they are about things.

“Mostly today, a lot of the conversation today was about numbers of tickets that they could get for the game on Saturday, because obviously everyone and their all their families want to come, they want their families to be there. Yeah, it’s a big day for everyone.”

Humphrey Ker quick to praise Phil Parkinson

While the players obviously deserve a huge amount of credit for what they have and still could achieve, Wrexham’s manager has been an inspired appointment.

He will become the first boss in history to win three promotions in a row if Wrexham do go up this season.

And speaking earlier this week, Ker praised Parkinson for his work at the club since arriving in the summer of 2021.

He stated: “Phil Parkinson our manager deserves an unbelievable amount of credit, because there have been other teams that have had more resources than us in the past and they’ve not been able to… I can’t say achieve what we’ve achieved, but got to the cusp that we have got to.”
