Wrexham have endured a remarkable rise in the last several years, as has become clear from the type of players they have already signed and could still sign this summer.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took over Wrexham when they were still in the National League.

They made their ambitions very clear from the get-go, however, signing Paul Mullin despite warnings about his wages.

On the back of Mullin dropping down from League One, Wrexham then nabbed Ollie Palmer from AFC Wimbledon in 2022.

But as the club continues to climb up the divisions, the quality of players they have attracted and can attract has grown immensely.

One of the first big-name deals to get done at Wrexham during the Rob and Ryan era was James McClean.

Humphrey Ker was stunned by Wrexham transfer

McClean joined Wrexham ahead of the 2023/24 League Two season getting underway.

The left-wing-back signed from Wigan Athletic and brought with him a vast amount of experience.

McClean has notched 158 appearances in the Premier League, in which he scored 11 goals and assisted nine.

The fact that Wrexham were able to get a deal over the line for the Irishman when they had just been promoted to League Two was amazing.

And Humphrey Ker was stunned at the McClean deal even being possible, commenting on the transfer during Season 3 Episode 7 of Welcome to Wrexham last year.

He said: “James McClean is an iconic figure. “When his name was first mentioned to me, my eyebrows shot up that a player like that would be interested in coming to us.”

More Premier League players expected at Wrexham

While McClean was one of the first, a host of former Premier League stars have and still could make the move to Wales.

Jay Rodriguez spent years in the top flight, while Matty James has lined up in England’s premier division.

Though he’s now left, Steven Fletcher was another with vast experience in the Premier League.

And with the 2025 summer transfer window now upon us, Wrexham are targeting high-level players from the top tier once more.
