Jamie Carragher apologises to Wrexham heroes after being stumped by Paul Mullin quiz question

Wrexham have been on quite the journey through the leagues in recent years, but some players have still slipped under the radar.

Wrexham are now just one promotion away from the Premier League after a remarkable rise under Phil Parkinson.

Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds’ 2021 takeover was, of course, the instigating factor behind Wrexham’s rise.

Money doesn’t guarantee anything, though, and Parkinson has masterminded Wrexham’s journey through the leagues with three straight promotions.

Some Wrexham players have now become household names off the back of on-pitch success and off-field exposure through ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ – but not everybody has been following the club’s rise.

Jamie Carragher apologises to Wrexham promotion heroes after Paul Mullin question

The international break tends to be a quiet time, especially with the September break coming just weeks into the new campaign.

This is the ideal time for a bit of fun, and most football fans relish the opportunity to show off some knowledge with a quiz or two.

Jamie Carragher has now taken on his son James in a quiz for Sky Sports, and Wrexham were brought up in one particular question.

The two Carraghers were asked to name Wrexham’s second-top goalscorer during Paul Mullin’s time at the STōK Cae Ras.

Mullin joined Wigan Athletic over the summer, and Latics teammate Carragher quickly picked out Ollie Palmer as the correct answer.

‘He won’t know that, my dad’ said Carragher junior, and he was right as the pundit plumped for Steven Fletcher over Palmer, Elliot Lee and Jordan Davies.

‘Steven Fletcher is the only one I knew!’ admitted Carragher. ‘Sorry, boys!’ he added, offering up an apology to Wrexham’s promotion heroes.

We can let Carragher off for this one, as most of his punditry work is based around the Premier League and Champions League.

Lower league action may not have been on his radar outside of his son’s development, while Fletcher’s reputation as a former Premier League striker may have kept him in Carragher’s mind.

Perhaps Carragher should come down to the STōK Cae Ras for a game or two, especially with his old friend Conor Coady now on board.

Steven Fletcher yet to announce his future after Wrexham exit

Fletcher is one of the biggest names to have passed through Wrexham in the Mac and Reynolds era, possibly rivalling James McClean.

The Scot was a top-level striker with Burnley, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sunderland, before spells with Marseille, Sheffield Wednesday, Stoke City and Dundee United.

Fletcher joined Wrexham in 2023 and made a huge impact as a super-sub goalscorer, with the majority of his 16 goals for Wrexham coming off the bench.

38-year-old Fletcher was let go by Wrexham this summer, and he has yet to join another club.

In fact, Fletcher has hinted at retirement this summer, believing that it would take something special to keep him in the game.

“I’m about 95 per cent sure that I’m done,” said Fletcher, who has since been seen working as a pundit.

Carragher and Fletcher could even cross paths as pundits down the line – and the Scot may be able to teach Carragher a thing or two about the players in Wrexham’s rise.
