Luke Young reveals his ‘ultimate goal’ for Wrexham after reaching impressive milestone

Despite reaching an impressive milestone on Tuesday night, Luke Young is focused on achieving his ultimate goal at Wrexham.

Wrexham captain Luke Young has lived through the highs that the club have been on since Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds tookover in February 2021.

The 31-year-old arrived at the Racecourse Ground in the summer of 2018 following spells at Torquay United and Plymouth Argyle.

Young has been a part of the furniture at Wrexham for almost six years now and while he played a prominent role in their title-winning campaign last term, making 38 appearances, he’s since only started eight matches in League Two.

The latest of which came away at MK Dons on Tuesday night as the midfielder reached an impressive milestone of 250 appearances and capped off the occasion by assisting James McClean for his goal.

Phil Parkinson awarded Young with a start following injuries to regular starters James Jones and George Evans.

He now has a chance to cement his place in the starting XI and has laughed off any suggestions that he’s reached legendary status at the club.

Luke Young wants to reach ‘ultimate goal’ at Wrexham

Although he surpassed the all-time leading scorer Tommy Bamford on Tuesday, Young isn’t getting carried away with the praise and is instead focused on taking Wrexham up the divisions, describing it as the “ultimate goal”.

Speaking to BBC Sport, he said: “All I want to do is give the best that I can to help the lads and help myself.

“And do everything that I can to get this football club up again. That is the ultimate goal.

“However much or however little I have played, or I will play between now and the end of the season, I hope everyone knows that whenever I’m called upon that I will give everything that I can for the club.”

Young has made a big impact

While he hasn’t played as much as he would have liked, Young’s presence in the dressing room has still been heard.

After all, he is the captain and the longest-serving player in the current squad, which underlines his importance to Parkinson.

When he speaks, the players will invariably listen and his experience has been vital in advising some of the younger players, including Max Cleworth and Arthur Okonkwo.

A huge presence off the pitch and a key figure on it, as seen against MK Dons, Young now has a golden chance to impress his manager while Jones and Evans are sidelined.

Parkinson unfortunately revealed that the injuries to his midfield duo look “quite serious”. While that is a huge blow to the Reds, it means the experienced Young can make that spot his own and show why he belongs in the side.

If he does appear in the starting XI against Gillingham, it will only be his second consecutive start since September.
