‘Nowhere near’: Wrexham star expresses frustration at slow start to season

Wrexham star Elliot Lee has bemoaned his side’s start to the season, but has claimed that there is plenty more to come from the team.

Phil Parkinson’s side took the National League by storm last season, earning promotion back to League Two for the first time since 2008, but it has been less of a fairytale ride so far.

Speaking to Leader Live, Lee stated that Wrexham have not yet hit top level, but there will be improvements as they adjust to the new division they are in.

“The Racecourse is a fortress for us and we were all unhappy with the MK Dons result and performance, we know it was nowhere near what we are like, and there were reasons for that but we are not making any excuses,” he stated.

“We have reacted in the right way, it was a great performance in the cup against Wigan and we won on penalties.

“We should have won at Wimbledon but whenever you get an away point you take it and it was a great performance against Walsall so it is building blocks.

“We are steadily getting better, we are getting fitter, we are getting stronger and we are getting sharper, and we are going to keep building on that.

“Hopefully there are more performances likes against Walsall and even better moving forward.

“We are nowhere near at our ceiling, we are building as a team. That is a great foundation for us to keep improving game-by-game for a real successful season.”

How have Wrexham been so far?

Wrexham have one win in their opening three League games, but have also progressed to the second round of the Carabao Cup after beating Wigan on penalties.

However, although the results have been mixed compared to last season’s dominance, the performances have been at a strong level since the opening-day defeat.

Wrexham were unlucky not to beat Wigan in the 90 minutes, and the Wimbledon game could have gone differently on another day.

Moving up to another division often requires a bit of adjustment time, and given that striker Paul Mullin is injured, there was bound to be a bit of struggle in the first few games.

Wrexham next play Swindon Town on Saturday, and they will hope to make it two wins from two.
