Following a booking against Newport County, Wrexham star, James McClean is now just two bookings away from being banned.

Following his signing, James McClean has become one of Wrexham’s most important players this season so far.

It has been a positive campaign for Phil Parkinson and Co as the Reds sit in second place at the time of writing.

With that being said, the last game they played was disappointing as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to rivals, Newport County. A Will Boyle red card ended up swaying the result in the home side’s favour.

Following the game, eagle-eyed fans have noticed that McClean could end up missing vital games if he picks up more bookings.

James McClean close to suspension

The Wrexham wing-back received a booking in the 37th minute of the derby. This was as his flailing arm connected with an opposition player.

This means, according to FotMob, McClean has picked up eight yellow cards and as a result, he is two yellows away from a two-match ban.

In a report by Goal.com, they have outlined how the booking process works in the EFL and how the Reds could be affected.

On that, they said: “According to League Two rules, a player will be suspended for two straight games if he collects 10 yellow cards in the first 37 games of a season. The duration of the suspension will be increased to three games if a player gets booked 15 times before the final of the regular season.”

This leaves the Irishman with ten games to not pick up two bookings before his tally will be reset and he will be safe.

Compared to the rest of his Wrexham teammates he has the most by any Wrexham player. He is followed by Elliot Lee, Paul Mullin and Eoghan O’Connell who have been booked five times each so far this campaign.

Just looking at more recent games, McClean was superb against Wimbledon and his crosses caused many problems throughout.

This season he has four assists and a goal to his name, which is quite great considering he is playing as a wing-back. He has been very consistent, especially given the fact that the other side of the pitch, right back has been a heavily rotated position.

It is safe to say that Parkinson has found a great player in signing McClean who has certainly improved the side this season.
