In the latest episode of Welcome to Wrexham, Rob McElhenney explained his ‘ultimate goal’ for Wrexham to Prince William.
Wrexham are building some serious momentum as a football club with Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds at the helm.
The Reds secured their second consecutive promotion with a 6-0 thumping of Forest Green Rovers in April and will be playing in League One next season.
For McElhenney and Reynolds, this achievement puts them one step closer to achieving their dream of taking Wrexham to the Premier League.
Whilst their impact on the pitch has been enormous, off the field they’ve had a massive influence on the community, with Jordan Davies even spearheading praise for the Hollywood duo.
Regularly donating to charity and increasing the global popularity of the town, it’s incredible what they’ve achieved in such a short space of time with their achievements now recognised by royalty.

Rob McElhenney explains ‘ultimate’ Wrexham goal to Prince William
Prince William visited Wrexham on St David’s Day earlier this year and scheduled a meeting at the Turf Pub, a now-famous bar due to the Welcome to Wrexham documentary.

In the latest episode of the hit series, the Prince of Wales thanked McElhenney for what he’s done for the team and the widespread impact he’s had on the local area.
Describing his influence from a purely footballing perspective, he said: “You give so many football fans who’s team maybe aren’t in the glory days that they want to be in or used to, the hope and the optimism that one day you can be back again.”
McElhenney then responded by outlining his ‘ultimate goal’ for Wrexham, seemingly aiming big with his ambitions.
“Our ultimate goal is to build a sustainable model that will allow us to not only get to the Premier League, but sustain in the Premier League and eventually win the Premier League and be in the Champions League,” the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star said.
McElhenney and Reynolds purchased Wrexham towards the end of 2020 when the side were trapped in the National League and now, they’re only two promotions away from sitting at England’s top table.
The hard work for Wrexham starts now
Wrexham have almost cruised to consecutive promotions, winning the title in the National League and finishing second in League Two.
For Phil Parkinson and his players, the hard work truly starts now as they’re competing against clubs with similar budgets, whereas before they were able to outspend their rivals in the fourth tier.
This means McElhenney and Reynolds will have to be extra savvy in the transfer window as it’s likely some of the players they want will also be courted by Huddersfield, Barnsley, Birmingham and Peterborough, four clubs with promotion ambitions themselves.
Luckily, Wrexham have a boss in Parkinson who has been promoted from this level twice with Colchester United in 2006 and Bolton Wanderers in 2017.
That will hold them in good stead as they enter the transfer window looking to build on their core of League One players by adding extra quality.
With a solid base to work from and two owners showing ambition, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a record-breaking third promotion achieved by the Welsh side in 2024/25.
