Wrexham have delivered an injury update on Paul Mullin that will leave fans fearing the worst ahead of pre-season.

Wrexham’s start to the summer transfer window has been hugely positive. Phil Parkinson has signed goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo and centre-back Lewis Brunt to permanent contracts.

Parkinson will be delighted to get two very promising young players through the door, in what is a complete switch in strategy to what supporters witnessed last summer.

Admittedly, there is still a lot of work to be done for the Reds to become promotion challengers but the captures of Okonkwo and Brunt offer hope of a productive summer.

That is heightened even further as Parkinson’s latest comments suggest a few more signings are in the pipeline.

Unfortunately, for all the positive work done by the club this summer, Wrexham have released an update on striker Paul Mullin that will leave fans fearing the worst.

Wrexham dealt a devastating Paul Mullin blow

There’s a sense of Deja Vu brewing at Wrexham as Mullin missed the first eight matches of the League Two campaign last season after suffering a punctured lung.

The Liverpool-born striker returned to fire 26 goals in all competitions as Parkinson’s men finished second and earned promotion to League One.

Sadly, Wrexham’s latest update on Mullin reveals he will miss the club’s upcoming pre-season tour of the United States after undergoing minor spinal surgery to correct a long-term lower back/hamstring issue.

The report states there is no timeframe for the 29-year-old’s return, although it is claimed he will be fit for the majority of the 2024/25 campaign and that is the only silver lining to this news.

Wrexham must find a temporary Paul Mullin replacement

Wrexham currently have seven strikers at the club but none of them can fill Mullin’s boots, who has tallied over a century of goals for the Welsh side in just three campaigns.

It’s a record that places among some of the deadliest strikers in the EFL and ahead of their return to the third tier, the goal machine was expected to continue his blistering form.

An unfortunate injury has prevented him from at least starting the campaign strong and until he does come back, Parkinson will need to replace his goal threat.

Without paying the premium in the market, or at least a six-figure fum, it’s difficult to find someone who can fit into the system and have the impact Mullin has on this side.

Current strikers Sam Dalby, Jake Bickerstaff and Billy Waters are on the chopping block while there are question marks over Jack Marriott’s credentials after a difficult start to life at Wrexham.

That leaves just Steven Fletcher and Ollie Palmer, who normally partner Mullin in attack and don’t have the firepower to replace him.

Parkinson wanted to add another striker to his current roster and the injury to his star man has made that a position of increased importance.
