Welcome to Wrexham season three has hit our screens, and it’s already got some huge moments for Red Dragons fans to look back on.

One was the epic pre-season tour of the USA, where Phil Parkinson and his side faced off with the likes of Chelsea, LA Galaxy and Manchester United.

After a bad opening defeat to Chelsea, the Welsh side didn’t half pull things back. They battered LA Galaxy 4-0 and then even beat Premier League opposition in Erik ten Hag’s United 3-1 – albeit the academy lot.

But although it was a memorable win in Wrexham’s history, the game was ultimately overshadowed by a reckless Nathan Bishop challenge on Paul Mullin.

What happened to Paul Mullin against Manchester United?

If you need your memory re-jogging, star striker Mullin suffered what was a potentially life-threatening injury against the Red Devils at the Snapdragon Stadium.

After colliding with United’s goalkeeper Nathan Bishop in pre-season, Mullin was taken to hospital where it was discovered he had punctured his lung

It was an extremely scary affair, ultimately ending as well as it could have done for Wrexham’s talisman.

The injury meant a prolonged period out of action, which also involved Mullin staying in the US despite his side departing for Wales.

”I was trying to breathe in but nothing was happening. I couldn’t get air into my lungs. That’s when I knew it was bad.

“In that struggle for breath, with my lips turning blue, I accepted that this could be it for me. That’s how it felt. I couldn’t breathe properly for a few minutes,” Mullin told The Athletic back in August 2023.

”I was thinking about my little boy, Albi. I hate being away from him and my partner Mollie for too long but I had told myself it was only two weeks and that I’d be back home soon. It ended up being much longer, but I’m so thankful it wasn’t worse.”

Paul Mullin’s chilling immediate reaction to punctured lung

Now, with ‘Welcome to Wrexham‘ season three hitting our screens, we can see Mullin’s immediate reaction to the injury – which was the stuff of nightmares. Episode one on Disney+ revealed the following conversation:

“What you feelings Mulls?” asked concerned medical staff. Mullin replied: “I can’t breathe. I can’t no. I can’t breathe.”

The scene then moved on to the changing rooms, where the 29-year-old was still in an immense amount of discomfort.

“It’s hurting to breathe,” he begins. “I feel like I can’t. You know what I mean? Speaking. It hurts. I’m trying to speak, but I can’t.”

Thankfully, with hindsight in our favour, we know Mullin makes a full recovery – but this must’ve been a tremendously scary time for the Wrexham forward.
