Phil Parkinson has now provided an update on the fitness of wing-back Ryan Barnett after he went off injured in the 1-0 defeat to Tranmere Rovers.

In their quest to win automatic promotion out of League Two, Phil Parkinson has been dealt his fair share of injury troubles at Wrexham.

Key players such as Thomas O’Connor, George Evans and James Jones have been injured during their hectic fixture schedule.

O’Connor returned to action on Saturday, featuring 11 minutes from the bench in the 1-0 loss to Tranmere and made a start for the reserves yesterday, while Evans is back on the grass and is expected to be back in full training early next week.

There wasn’t such good news on the fitness of Jones, who isn’t making the progress he wanted, while wing-back Ryan Barnett’s injury is looking like bad news for Wrexham.

Phil Parkinson shares ‘serious’ Ryan Barnett injury update

Barnett has been a key player for the Reds down the right flank, utilising his boundless energy and athleticism to fly up and down the wing.

Despite direct competition arriving in the shape of Luke Bolton on transfer deadline day, Barnett has predominantly kept his place in the side, starting in each of their last six League Two matches.

The 24-year-old has become undroppable with his performances, although he has shown signs of fatigue in the goalless draw against Harrogate and defeat to Tranmere.

On Saturday, Barnett was substituted 20 minutes from time with a foot injury after being on the receiving end of a late challenge.

Parkinson is keeping his fingers crossed that he receives good news after he underwent a scan on Tuesday and will find out the severity of his injury later in the week.

“Barney is a little bit more serious,” Parkinson told the Leader. “I thought it was a dangerous challenge on Barney; he carried on for a bit but had to come off in the end in the second half.

“We had to him for a scan on his foot yesterday and we are just hoping to get good news with that.

“We are just hoping it is a badly bruised foot but we will know more later in the week.”

A big blow to Wrexham but a chance for Luke Bolton

Wrexham supporters will hope Barnett’s injury isn’t too serious and he’s in contention to start against Grimsby this weekend.

If the worst-case scenario unfolds – and the former Shrewsbury Town defender is sidelined – Bolton will have a chance to impress Parkinson.

It’s been a difficult period for the Manchester City academy graduate, who hasn’t played as much as he would have wanted but has looked like a “real threat” coming off the bench.

This could be his chance to shine if Barnett is out and there’s no better way to prove himself than during a vital promotion run-in.
