Phil Parkinson gives honest verdict when asked about recent Wrexham contract gaffe

Phil Parkinson has offered his reaction after Wrexham made a huge mistake in a contractual agreement with one player.

A constant wave of progression has cast over Wrexham in recent years following back-to-back promotions under Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

The Hollywood owners have aimed to continue that in this summer’s transfer market by landing Arthur Okonkwo, Lewis Brunt and George Dobson while tying down first-teamers Max Cleworth, George Evans and Tom O’Connor to new contracts.

Very rarely have the Reds made a mistake, as McElhenney and Reynolds are running an organised ship, but the club have recently allowed one error to slip through the net.

Phil Parkinson responds to Jordan Tunnicliffe’s contract gaffe

On Wednesday, it was revealed that there was an ‘input mistake’ in Jordan Tunnicliffe’s Wrexham contract. The 30-year-old was one of eight players released from his deal at the end of last season, as they thought it expired in June 2024.

That doesn’t appear to be the case, though, as Tunnicliffe’s contract expiry date reads June 2025 – not 2024.

The imposing centre-back is officially still a Wrexham player, while it has been confirmed that the club are aware of the administrative error and are working on a resolution.

Manager Phil Parkinson was also not aware of this situation and gave his verdict on the dispute in an interview with The Leader.

Parkinson said: “Obviously there is an issue and it is being dealt with independently. That is all I can say on that at the moment.

“Of course it will be resolved but it has got to be dealt with independently and we will see what happens.”

Wrexham need to resolve Tunnicliffe’s contract situation quickly

Wrexham have made a very embarrassing mistake with Tunnicliffe’s contract and if they have to pay his final year, it could cost the club money.

For the club and player, a resolution to this situation will need to be resolved so the defender has time to assess his options and ultimately, find another team.

The defender has made over a century of appearances in League Two, namely at Crawley Town, with the Englishman a talented operator in the fourth tier.

Unfortunately, Tunnicliffe’s time at Wrexham has been blighted by injuries and since his arrival in July 2022, he’s only featured on 47 occasions in all competitions, making just seven appearances last term.

At the age of 30, he has a good few years left in him and judging by his previous exploits, a League Two side would be silly to not take a gamble on a player Parkinson labelled ‘immense’.
