Wrexham defender, Jacob Mendy is set to rejoin his club teammates and be available for upcoming games as Gambia were knocked out of AFCON.
Wrexham have had to deal with the loss of Jacob Mendy in recent weeks. This as he first joined their training camp before ultimately being called up to their squad for the Africa Cup of Nations.
The form of Phil Parkinson’s side hasn’t been affected so much by his absence as their great form has continued.
Other than the recent derby day defeat to Newport County, the Reds had won three games on the bounce in all competitions.
With Wrexham looking to bounce back from defeat last time out, they have now been handed a boost in the form of Mendy’s return.
Jacob Mendy dumped from AFCON
Wrexham have been missing Mendy for many weeks after he was called up to The Gambia squad for the Africa Cup of Nations. Now the 27-year-old is now set to return to North Wales after Gambia were knocked out of the competition.
Mendy became the first ever Wrexham player to feature at the tournament when featured against Guinea. The 27-year-old played two games, having been left out of the 3-0 loss against Senegal.

Thanks to a defeat to Cameroon the Scorpions failed to make the group stages, this as they finished bottom of Group C with zero points from three games. This even saw their manager, Tom Saintfiet, resign straight after the defeat was confirmed.
This now means that Mendy will now potentially be available for some key games that are coming up. The Reds’ next game is against Championship side Blackburn Rovers in the fourth round of the FA Cup. Following this they face League Two strugglers Salford City.
Well-timed return to Wrexham
Mendy’s return will come at a perfect time for Wrexham as Parkinson is having to deal with plenty of injury worries. This sees defensive options Anthony Forde, Tom O’Connor, Aaron Hayden and Jordan Tunnicliffe have all out having been dealing with knocks.
In recent weeks, James Mclean has been on top of his game which may see it difficult for Mendy to come back in. This could be the case unless the Gambian returns to step back into the right wing-back role which he often has.
With that being said, Ryan Barnett has recently returned from injury himself and will be hopeful of maintaining his place.
This is a good problem for Parkinson to have especially given all the frustrations he has had to deal with in recent weeks.
