Wrexham will be confident that they can compete well in the Championship next season.

Phil Parkinson is under no illusions that his Wrexham squad will need to be bolstered this summer but the club already have a core of players that are good enough to pick up points next season.

Matty James and James McClean have bundles of Championship experience and will be key figures on and off the pitch next season.

The Red Dragons are also keen to add quality. Wrexham are interested in Tommy Doyle with the midfielder the latest Premier League player to be linked. However, the manager is keen for one thing to remain at the Racecourse Ground over the summer.

Phil Parkinson doesn’t want ‘winning mentality’ to change at Wrexham

Speaking to the Leader, Parkinson has been explaining the importance of keeping a ‘winning mentality’ at the club after securing three successive promotions.

Parkinson stated: “We are a club which has got a winning mentality, and we want to keep that. The momentum of getting promotion three years on the bounce, we want to keep that.

“That will be working with the players we have got in their off-season programmes and making sure everybody comes back in the best physical shape.

“Planning the pre-season out to get the maximum we can out of every player, and of course adding players to the squad to help the existing ones we have got.”

Parkinson has admitted Wrexham departures will occur this summer but the message is clear that the Red Dragons won’t be dismantling their entire squad and undoing their hard work of recent years.

Wrexham have identified positions to strengthen

In terms of a transfer update, Parkinson revealed that he and Steve Parkin have identified the positions they believe will need strengthening.

Parkinson explained: “Me and Steve Parkin know the qualities we like in players and it is about identifying the positions we feel we need to strengthen, which we have done.

“Then it is looking at the players available and having meetings with them, analysing what they bring and trying to bring the lads in which we feel can fit into the group we have already got because we have got a really good side.”

Interest in Doyle alongside Tom Cairney and Myles Peart-Harris would suggest that central midfield is a key area the Red Dragons are looking at.

In addition, Wrexham are interested in Craig Dawson and are also monitoring the contract situations of Ben Davies and Harry Darling – suggesting that the centre of defence is also another position in need of bolstering.
