Phil Parkinson praises Wrexham substitute George Evans after Leyton Orient impact

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson saw his side pick up a point on the road on Saturday, drawing 0-0 away at Leyton Orient.

Wrexham were back on the road on Saturday afternoon, travelling down to London to take on Leyton Orient.

Having picked up a home win over Crawley Town, Wrexham were hoping for some joy away from the STōK Cae Ras.

This was a very tricky game though and Wrexham were a little fortunate to still be level at the break.

Orient boss Richie Wellens felt his side should have been out of sight at the break but Wrexham finished strongly.

One goalmouth scramble saw the ball trickle just wide of the post, meaning Wrexham had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Phil Parkinson hails Wrexham substitute

It’s often suggested that winning home games and picking up points on the road is the magic equation for success.

Wrexham have certainly done that, claiming four wins from four at home whilst picking up five points from a possible 12 on the road.

Boss Phil Parkinson has reacted to Saturday’s draw and praised the impact of one substitute.

Midfielder George Evans was introduced in the second half, coming on for Andy Cannon before the hour mark.

Parkinson has now told Wrexham’s official YouTube channel that he felt Evans provided ‘the extra pass’ in midfield and helped Wrexham gain control of the midfield battle.

Parkinson added that he thought Wrexham would go on and win the game thanks to Evans’ impact, but it just wasn’t meant to be.

“We started getting the ball into Dobbo and got a bit more control, and then second half, when George Evans came on, I thought he gave us that extra pass we needed to gain a bit of control,” said Parkinson.

“I felt we were going to go on and win the game in that last 25 to 30 minutes, but we weren’t able to produce the finish or the final cross,” he added.

George Evans may be called upon

Evans has yet to start a League One game this season and his substitute appearances total just 60 minutes of league action.

The 29-year-old is a valued player in the Wrexham squad but breaking into the midfield is tough right now.

George Dobson has impressed since signing over the summer whilst Andy Cannon and Elliot Lee are difficult to displace.

Evans has waited for his chance and shown that he can still make an impact – and he may be needed very soon.

Parkinson has noted that Evans could play in defence with right-sided centre back Max Cleworth now facing a spell on the sidelines.

Evans is a midfielder by trade but has dropped into defence at times and may yet be called upon to start against Stevenage on Tuesday night.
