Wrexham may be fully focused on this weekend’s game against Stockport County but the club have now confirmed a crucial new contract extension.

Phil Parkinson is gearing up for yet another meeting with Stockport County’s Dave Challinor this weekend.

Wrexham host County at the STōK Cae Ras as the League One promotion battle continues with just a handful of games to go.

Wrexham sit third after Wycombe Wanderers beat Rotherham United on Tuesday night, but only goal difference separates the two sides.

The push for promotion to the Championship is the most important thing right now but Wrexham are also looking to the future.

Harry Ashfield reacts to new Wrexham contract

Wrexham fans have mostly seen experienced players arrive to help the club move up through the leagues.

Max Cleworth is flying the flag of the Wrexham academy though having stepped up to become a consistent star at first-team level.

Another youth star is emerging though with Harry Ashfield really catching the eye of late.

Wrexham fans raved about Ashfield with the midfielder turning in a superb performance against Peterborough United in the EFL Trophy.

Phil Parkinson added that Ashfield is a ‘gifted’ talent as hopes rise that the teenager could become another Cleworth.

Wrexham have now shown great faith in Ashfield by confirming a new contract until the end of the 2026-27 season.

Wrexham can also add a year onto that deal with Ashfield’s long-term future now secured.

Ashfield has reacted to his new deal, telling the Wrexham official website that it’s a simply ‘excellent feeling’ to be staying at the club.

Ashfield now wants to kick on and prove himself in Parkinson’s first team, believing that he can make an impression moving forward.

“It’s an excellent feeling to sign a new deal with my Club. I’m excited to kick-on and see what I can do in the first team – hopefully I can prove myself,” said Ashfield.

Boss Parkinson is just as delighted and congratulated Ashfield on a significant step in his career.

Parkinson even thought back to last pre-season, noting that Ashfield has been working so hard around the Wrexham first team ever since last summer.

Parkinson added that he and his staff are now looking forward to seeing how Ashfield can progress and develop around the Wrexham side with this new deal signed.

“I’d like to congratulate Harry on his new contract. He’s worked very hard right from day one of pre-season and we’re looking to seeing his development,” said Parkinson.

Ashfield may need to wait until pre-season for more chances in the first team.

Wrexham are chasing promotion and Parkinson may understandably feel that this isn’t the right time to throw a teenager into an important role.

If Elliot Lee suffers another injury blow though, Wrexham may well need to call on the technical quality of Ashfield to open teams up and provide some magic in the final third.
