Wrexham are pushing for promotion to the Championship but Wycombe Wanderers have now reclaimed second place in the League One table.

The League One promotion race has entered its final stretch with Wrexham and Wycombe Wanderers battling it out for second place.

Wrexham beat Wycombe 1-0 on Saturday to leapfrog the Chairboys and take second place.

Wycombe had a game in hand though and that came on Tuesday night as they travelled to take on Rotherham United.

A win would take Wycombe level with Wrexham once again, but crucially leave them ahead on goal difference – reclaiming second place again.

Wycombe Wanderers pull out late win over Rotherham United

This game was tight for an hour with neither side able to find the opener before the hour mark.

Wrexham will have been watching on with real interest and there were surely cheers around North Wales when Louie Sibley put Rotherham in front on 66 minutes.

The joy was short-lived though with Richard Kone finding the net yet again to draw Wycombe level.

Wycombe shunned Luton Town’s interest in Kone during January transfer window, snubbing huge money for the prolific forward.

The Chairboys appeared to be heading towards a draw before late drama ensued with Sonny Bradley and Gideon Kodua finding the net with 90 minutes up.

Former Wrexham target Jonson Clarke-Harris pulled one back for Rotherham but there was to be no leveller as Wycombe secured all three points.

That result takes Wycombe above Wrexham and into second place once again, leading on goal difference by seven goals.

Wrexham run-in v Wycombe Wanderers

Wrexham resume the League One run-in this weekend, hosting Stockport County at the STōK Cae Ras.

Exeter City, Cambridge United, Burton Albion, Wigan Athletic and Bristol Rovers follow with all five teams currently in the bottom nine of the League One table.

Wrexham must pick up big points in that run before finishing the season with away games at Blackpool and Lincoln City either side of hosting in-form Charlton Athletic.

Wrexham now have back-to-back home games against Lincoln City and Shrewsbury Town before heading to Reading and Huddersfield Town.

Stevenage, Bolton Wanderers, Charlton, Leyton Orient and Stockport finish out the season for Wycombe in what looks to be a very tough run-in.

Rotherham boss Steve Evans is backing Wrexham for promotion through the play-offs, but Phil Parkinson will be desperate to leapfrog Wycombe once again and take second place.
